You know when you look at something and just know it’s going to be a massive hit in your house?  Well I had that feeling as soon as I spotted the Wilko Roadsters Slot Car Racing System on the Wilko website. It’s an absolute bargain too, £15.00 instead of £30, and to be honest even at £30 it’s great value for money.

The set comes with 2.8 metres of track, 2 Lamborghini super cars and some track accessories as well as two controllers with boost buttons.  It doesn’t come with an instruction booklet which I found a little strange, and you will need 8 x AA batteries to power the set.

Aimed at children aged 5 years and over, my son couldn’t wait to get started.

We followed the layout on the box to construct the figure of 8 circuit, but I’m still not convinced I’ve used the upright supports properly, but it does the job.  The track fits together well, but in my opinion some of the accessories are rather flimsy and don’t always stay attached to the track very well.  We’ve given up on the start/finish sign and the bridge, but the corner armco barriers have stayed together well.  It could be us, again, it would be helpful to have a leaflet to check against.  But for the price, in general we have all been super impressed with the Wilko Roadsters Slot Car Racing System.

I thought my son would take a while to get used to the trigger controls for this set, but what do I know.  He got it instantly.

To the point where he didn’t even need Mummy to play against him!

The headlights of the cars light up as they are racing and there is a turbo boost button on the side of the controllers to speed things up.  We do find it harder to control the cars when we use this button, but he loves his crashes and it gives him an opportunity to bring in his Safety Car and some Formula One pretend play.  In general, he’s happy playing without the boost button, the cars stay on the track well and the competition gets fierce.

It wasn’t long before Daddy P joined in with the fun and we’ve all played with this set a lot since we first opened it.  It’s been great to see my son let his Dad play with him with no issues.

The Wilko Roadsters Slot Car Racing System has got a big thumbs up from all the family and will give my son and I our F1 fix until the new season starts in March! It would be great if Wilko decide to add add-on sets to give different track layouts and cars, but right now, this is a massive hit.

Wilko have a great range of toys and games available in store and on-line and all at family friendly prices too.
