Pretty Baby

Pretty Baby – a book review

I recently received Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica to review on behalf of the Mumsnet Blogger Network and couldn’t wait to get started on this thriller.  Published through Mira Books, this paperback book does not disappoint.

Pretty Baby

I loved this book from the start.  I really enjoy books where each chapter is told from a different characters prospective.  We get to meet the ‘Good Samaritan’ Heidi, her husband Chris and Willow with her baby.  I found my allegiances and sympathies changed as the story unfolded.

At the beginning of Pretty Baby you think Heidi is very level-headed and in control, but maybe slightly nuts for taking in a complete stranger and baby without at least consulting her own family.  But as the story unravels you learn more about Willow, her past and what she has had to endure.

It soon becomes clear that this young girl has been through hell and back, but then Heidi’s own story begins to immerge and it’s not long before it’s clear that she has her own demons to face.

There are twists and turns throughout the book which keep you guessing where the story is heading right to the end.  The plot is unlike anything I’ve read before and I loved the fast pace of the action.  I was left being thankful that my own childhood was a happy one and that I had different reasons for being a mother of one child.  Thought provoking, a great read, and I can thoroughly recommend this thriller.
