This year sees us commemorate a rather special anniversary. Throughout 2016 the nation will be celebrating 150 Years of Beatrix Potter. I’ve teamed up with a number of other bloggers to share our thoughts on a true legend of Children’s literature as we celebrate her life and legacy.
Beatrix Potter is known the world over as the author and illustrator who brought us Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, Jeremy Fisher and all their friends. She was ahead of her time really as she started the trend for merchandising products associated with Peter Rabbit all those years ago. She was also a very keen conservationist and well known for her botanical drawings. If you are ever in the Lake District, I can certainly recommend a visit to her home at Hill Top.
I’ve always loved reading, and the numerous tales of animal folk written by Beatrix Potter were a fundamental part of my childhood. I have many happy memories of visits to the library in Aldershot to borrow the next book in the series. She brought the animals to life for me, and I would read her stories over and over again. My childhood collection of Whimsy ornaments stemmed from my love of Beatrix Potter and her characters. I would create my own adventures on my windowsill with them, all based on the famous Potter stories. These days I get to share the books with Monkey, but also the lovely animated TV series. He loves Peter Rabbit now, as much as I did as a child. I certainly can’t wait to see Kitty in Boots when it is published later this year. Have you heard about this addition to the series which lay undiscovered for so many years?
I have a friend with a little boy and this lovely Peter Rabbit plush toy from GUND will be heading into his arms this Easter. He’s 16 cm tall and suitable for children aged 1 year and over. He is totally adorable and just so soft. You can find him in H Samuel and F Hinds for £9.95.
Now I’ve got Easter under wraps for Monkey with this adorable Charbonnel et Walker Milk Chocolate Peter Rabbit. Isn’t he adorable? He’s almost too good to eat, but I’m sure Monkey will give it a go. He even comes with a blue coloured chocolate jacket. Priced at £15 he’s 140g of milk chocolate magic.
We will be celebrating 150 Years of Beatrix Potter ourselves with a visit to Willows Activity Farm, St Alban’s later in the year. They have a new Peter Rabbit Adventure Playground which opens on 2nd April 2016.
I can wait to see Monkey’s face when he sees the Peter Rabbit Secret Treehouse, built around a 100-year-old ash tree, and Benjamin Bunny Treetop Adventures, based on his beloved TV series. I’m sure I’ll be getting lost in the maze and we’ll all enjoying sampling the delights within the Peter Rabbit Burrow Cafe. Don’t tell Monkey, but there’s even a Tractor trailer ride – he will be one very happy little boy. You can keep up to date with all the news from Willows Activity Farm over on their Facebook page.
What are your favourite childhood memories of Beatrix Potter? I’d love to hear all about them. Why not pop over to In the Playroom tomorrow to hear what memories Anna has.
disclosure: I’ve received the above mentioned items for taking part in this blog tour. My opinions still remain my own honest opinions.
