Walking to Breedon on the Hill

Walking to Breedon on the Hill

Whenever we drive to my best friends you can’t help but notice the church at Breedon on the Hill on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border. It stands high above the landscape on an outcrop of rock. It almost looks as if at some point in time long ago it emerged from the earth in a volcanic eruption. It’s certainly somewhere I’ve wanted to walk to, for years. So on our last trip that’s exactly what we did. Walking to Breedon on the Hill on a lovely sunny day in May, seemed like the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

The weather was glorious and even though we set off fairly early in the morning, you could already tell it was going to be a scorcher.

After Monkey’s rather epic walk around Staunton Harold Reservoir the day before, we decided on a shorter, more leisurely stroll which would take us to the church at Breedon on the Hill.

We’ve walked along the local cycle path (disused railway line) many times before and Monkey knows it well.

This time though we were to head off through the fields following a footpath. We could see our target up ahead.

Getting ever closer as we walked.

Rape seed fields were to be the signature of the weekend. So much yellow against the blue skies.

As we walked through the cutting in the field, look who we met!  I think this poor chap might have been rather lost.

We carried on heading ever closer to the village of Breedon and the church beyond.

When we arrived in Breedon on the Hill we headed on around the edge of the Quarry, much to Monkey’s delight. We could see the church standing high above us.  Not far to go now hopefully.

We were soon back on a footpath, heading up the hill.

Before we knew it, there we were, at the very top of the hill.

It was certainly worth the walk for the views alone, but of course the star of the show was behind us.

Admiring the church we’d seen from a distance for many a year. You could just imagine the scene in days gone by as villagers walked up that path heading for Sunday service.

We enjoyed the views, wandered around the headstones, which were in remarkably good order and paid a visit to the beacon which had been lit not that long ago to celebrate the Queens 90th Birthday.

We stopped for a drink and a snack before heading back down the hill.

The views along the way heading down were just as wonderful as when we’d been heading for the church.  A little breather along the way, kept Monkey in good spirits too.

Back in the village itself we headed to something else that I’ve always wanted to take a look at.  Something I’ve often seen as I’ve been driving past over the years.  On the outskirts of Breedon on the Hill is a little Round House, built around 1793 where the village ruffians would be housed until they could be moved to prison.

We were surprised to find that the door actually opened, and let me tell you, it’s extremely dark inside and not somewhere I would relish spending a minute in, let alone longer!

It was time for lunch, time to head back out of the village.  Homeward bound.

Walking to Breedon on the Hill, on a lovely Spring day. There aren’t much better ways to spend a Sunday morning. We’d certainly walked up an appetite and I’d crossed off a couple of things on my bucket list.

Do you have any walks planned for the half term holidays?  We’re off to Portugal and I’m itching to get there now.

Why not Pin It for later 🙂

  1. How lovely to explore somewhere you’ve been admiring from afar for years. Love all the yellow fields. We used to take yearly photos of us all in them when we lived in Gloucestershire so determined to find some here during half term #countrykids

  2. It looks like you and Monkey had a great time exploring Breedon on the Hill, what a quaint little town to visit. It’s great that after driving passed it so many times you finally got to visit the church and see the views from the top. Monkey looks like he’s having a fab time leading you around the paths showing the way, it’s great to see his confidence growing. Have fun in Portugal, I look forward to reading about it. Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.

  3. Sounds like you had a really lovely time exploring. I love the photos of the church with the sky, just beautiful! Enjoy your holiday and hopefully lots of sunshine 🙂 #countrykids xx
