Busy Bee – Silent Sunday My Sunday Photo 030716. I was out in the back garden with Monkey recently and we spotted this enormous bee in the grass. The photo doesn’t do it justice, it was huge!
I’d never seen a bee like it, so a quick email to Guru Gramps was sent. What is it? His reply – a Queen Red Tailed Bumble Bee – Bombus Lapidarius, which apparently nests underground and is rather rare these days.
Have you spotted anything unusual in your garden recently
It is unusual as it has so much black on it and less of the stripes which you associate with bees. It must be good to have Guru Gramps on hand!

Wow, that’s unusual! I don’t think I’ve seen one of those before. My dad is a great source of information on nature too!
Amazing detail, I’ve never seen one of these before.
Thank you for linking up
Great shot, love how close up it is, so much detail.
a very unusual looking bee. we have tiny native bees here which are stingless and very small. this one looks a bit like a wasp doesn’t it?
Oh wow! That is unusual. I haven’t seen one of those before…
