A little reading success

A little reading success

Yesterday morning we were sat having breakfast.  Each morning Monkey reads his school reading book to me, reluctantly.  Since the new school term I’m lucky if we get five pages out of him.  It’s not much when you see the number of sentences per page.  Some mornings are less of a battle than others.  But there’s rarely ever any great enthusiasm. Yesterday morning was a different and we had a little reading success.

He read to page 10 without a quibble, I thought he was going to read the next page too, but then he stopped and decided he’d had enough.  No problem, that’s brilliant you read 10 pages Monkey, and read them really well too.  That’s all I said.

He took the book back and read on, and on.  He turned the pages himself and kept going. Never stopping, getting almost all the words right first time.  Working out, trying, reading, reading well. A little reading success.  He read the whole book, cover to cover.  24 pages in one go, a minor miracle in this house.  The biggest miracle being that he just did it, he just read beautifully by himself.  I was speechless, thrilled and so proud of him.  I know it’s all in him, I know by the way he talks to me, that it’s all going on in his head.  He takes everything in, just sometimes struggles to get it out.  Yesterday morning was just wonderful.

Mummy, will you tell my teacher please?  Well Monkey, you could tell her yourself.  She’d be thrilled to hear it. No Mummy, you need to tell her please.  Ok then, I will, and I did. Her reaction, brilliant, we’ll trying him on the next band up today and see what happens.

At school pick up time Monkey came running out of class.  Mummy I’m reading Turquoise books now.  There’s lots more pages and lots more words on each page.  Well that’s great news little man.  You can do it, you just have to believe in yourself.

We’ll take our time and see how it goes.  It’s a magical moment I won’t forget in a hurry, that’s for sure.  My boy can do anything when he puts his mind to it.  Maybe one day he’ll actually read one of his own books with the same enthusiasm I witnessed yesterday morning.  Who knows!

  1. Well done Monkey. I think the best thing is by far and away what you’re doing, and I’m doing (with a little bit of ‘you need to get it done by’) is letting them lead. With everything they’ll get there in their own time (it’s just exasperating for us when we know they can do it).

  2. Oh this is brilliant, I love it when reading falls into place and they begin to learn to master it for themselves.

  3. Oh wow!!! That is fabulous news. What an absolute star. It’s lovely that he was so proud of himself too and knew he’d achieved something special.
