The Frog Who Was Blue

The Frog Who Was Blue – review and giveaway

I’m always on the look out for a new book to read with Monkey, and anything involving animals is always a good place to start.  The Frog Who Was Blue is written by Faiz Kermani and was published through Matador Books not long ago.

The Frog Who Was Blue

In The Frog Who Was Blue we meet Biriwita, who lives with his friends around the shore of Lake Ticklewater in Malawi.  The frogs there are all blue. Biriwita has won a place at the prestigious Croak College, the finest school for frogs in the land.  Everyone is so proud of him, as he’s the first frog from Lake Ticklewater to be offered a place at Croak College.

The Frog Who Was Blue

Biriwita heads off excitedly and is welcomed by his new teacher.  But the other pupils at Croak College take an instant dislike to him.  He’s blue!  Frogs should be green.  So begins a miserable time for Biriwita as he’s excluded from play time, is laughed at and called names.  None of the frogs have taken the time to get to know Biriwita, they’ve just decided to be nasty to him because he’s different.
But luckily for them Biriwira, although he’s sad to be treated so sadly, and is missing his friends, he still looks out for his new classmates.  They are all having fun in the lake and haven’t realised that a crocodile has designs on them for his lunch.  Instead of listening to Biriwira and his warnings, they laugh at him.  But the little blue frog doesn’t give up, and manages to find a way to scare the crocodile away, just as he’s about to eat the frogs.
Suddenly the Croak College frogs realise the error of their ways, and that it’s ok to be different.

It’s a lesson we could all learn at the moment isn’t it, and one that I’m keen for my son to fully understand.  It’s good to be an individual but just as important for others to realise that too.

  1. Dog, as we have had dog/s as pet/s over the years. A dog is part of the family very quickly, they are loving and loyal.

  2. monkeys because i am fascinated on seeing how much mischief they can get up to … just like my boys! x

  3. I have a love of animals so hard to pick just one, but I do have a soft spot for elephants, so large and majestic and vegetarians.

  4. I love cats, because they’re indifferent and hate ‘hoomans’, but we’re bigger than them and can cuddle the fluffies!

  5. WOLF, i love wolves and my whole house is decorated with wolf stuff like dream catchers, clocks, mugs, framed pictures etc im sure you get the picture. ive always loved wolves and had an obsession with them,

  6. I love wolves, they look stunning, I like that they live together, and I just think they are quite peaceful really

  7. I love penguins! I love the way they move so quickly in the water and waddle so slowly on land! They seem to have lots of personality and are so cute too!

  8. I love guinea pigs because they are such gentle creatures but also full of personality and they make great pets for children

  9. Seals because here in Norfolk we have a beach that they come onto to have their pups. The pups are so cute.

  10. I love dogs, and currently have one sending my foot to sleep, but I can’t disturb him!
My favourite more exotic animal is the giraffe, because I got to feed a family of them and I just fell in love, even when I got a big lick with a blue tongue!

  11. Up until last week it’s always been the humble Sloth as I always admired their chilled out, laid back approach to life…but I was watching a wildlife show that showed how their fur is absolutely riddled with creepy crawlies…moths & insects. The narrator said the Sloths allowed them to live there because their wriggling kept their fur aerated…but it’s really coz they can’t be bothered to preen 😉

  12. thats a hard one for me as i love all animals but mine is owls i have loved them since being a little girl and helping my aunt with her bird rescue centre

  13. I’ve always loved otters. One of my happiest memories was seeing them in the wild on a holiday in Scotland. Beautiful animals that bring me delight.

  14. I love snakes as i find them so pretty and interesting although i know it might sound crazy but i think they are great creatures

  15. LOVE cats. We used to have six, but due to old age and illness we don’t have any at the moment, although we do feed a regular little visitor.

  16. I love dogs, they’re so intelligent, faithfull and quickly become a member of your family….not happy with the malting though lol.

  17. I love dogs, they are wonderfully friendly and have great character though my favourite animal is a white bengal tiger x

  18. Our favourite animals are rabbits, as they are the most neglected animals in the UK, they are kind natured and given the right environment, love and care they make amazing companions and family members. We now take in those in need and help get them back to good health, neuter, vaccine and pair them and find them their forever homes.

  19. Love butterflies, always have found them enchanting and magical, The life cycle of a butterfly is such so fascinating

  20. I love dogs because they can live in my home and give love and affection and keep me healthy because they need regular walks.

  21. I love dogs – especially my little Bedlington Terrier, Bentley. He is so nervous at the moment and needs a lot of love.

  22. My favourite animal is actually a frog! I have no idea why now, it started off as a strange obsession with a friend when we were younger (she was duck, I was frog!) and the fascination stayed with me into adulthood

  23. my favourite animal is a squirrel because there is nothing better then being in the park and watching their antics xxx

  24. My favourite animal is a dolphin. They are so graceful, elegant and intelligent. I was lucky enough to swim with dolphins once and it was the most amazing experience of my life.

  25. My favourite animal is a dinosaur because they are awesome! (Although, if I wasn’t to count extinct animals it would be an octopus…. Same reason).

  26. Do love horses as they are so versatile and have so many different breeds and have so many uses (although some breeds will do just about any job). From the majestic strength of the Shire to the absolute beauty of the Arabs. 🙂 Would love my own again.

  27. Used to love meerkats ever since watching a documentary when i was just a little meerkat pup myself. But, thanks to that flamin’ advert, they’re everywhere and i’ve totally gone off them, complete opposite effect to most other people who now love them.

My 2nd love (now my 1st animal love) is the tiger. Powerful, graceful, beautiful.

  28. Parrots and cats. Parrots because of their talking, and cats because of their cuteness. Of course, you can’t have both in the same household for obvious reasons!

  29. I love most animals, it would have been an easier question to answer if I had to name one I dont like.. for example: Slugs and snakes…
We have 3 cats at home who rule… but when growing up (in Africa, so very different to the UK) I had dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and at one point a monkey! Plus various tropical fish aquariums… so I guess I love animals.
