I’m not totally sure how my son became so totally obsessed with farm machinery. I think his love of Tractor Ted may have something to do with it. Over the years we’ve seen a number of tractors join his collection, and we bought him a combine harvester a couple of years ago which is a treasured possession. For quite some time Monkey has been asking if he could add a Forage Harvester to his armoury of vehicles. Isn’t it just the same as a Combine I said. The look of horror on his face told me that quite clearly, this was a very different beast. When we received the Britains John Deere 8600i Self Propelled Forage Harvester recently from Tomy Toys UK, I just knew he would be overjoyed.
It was one of those mornings when I opened a box and squealed myself, knowing just how much this particular parcel was going to make Monkey happy. You’ve never seen that child get dressed so quickly when I mentioned he might quite like what had just arrived.
It’s at moments like this that I wish he was happy for me to video him, as there were some priceless moments of pure joy and disbelief. He’d got his dream toy. The Easter holidays were going to begin in style.
The Britains John Deere 8600i Self Propelled Forage Harvester is a 1:32 scale replica made of die-cast metal with plastic components. It’s aimed at children aged 3 years and over, and apparently it’s awesome.
The harvester comes complete with a grass header as well as the standard maize header for double the amount of fun. The headers are easily changed and click into place on the harvester. My 7-year-old needed no assistance with this operation.
Once in place you are ready to harvest your crop. The header adjusts up and down with pistons on the underside of the vehicle meaning it can cope with all sorts of terrain. I can see some harvesting going on in our garden in the weeks ahead.
The maize harvester header has cogs which can be moved manually and the grass header has wheels and a roller that move with the machine, and teeth you can move manually. It’s all adds to the realism of this toy.
The Britains John Deere 8600i Self Propelled Forage Harvester also has rear wheel steering and the auger (the bit that transfers the grass/maize to the waiting trailer moves up and down and from side to side.
When the harvesting is complete you can just pull up next to your trust tractor and trailer and unload.
Priced at £39.95 this is a great addition to our agricultural collection and will be put to work again and again in the months ahead I’m sure. It’s really robust and there aren’t any small plastic components that might get snapped off by younger children. My young farmer gives this set a massive thumbs up.
