A gift guide for 7 year old boys

A gift guide for 7 year old boys

I’m often asked for ideas of what to buy a boy of my son’s age, especially ones who aren’t into computer games and screens.  So I’ve put together my own idea of a gift guide for 7 year old boys but actually, I’m pretty sure lots of girls will love these ideas too.  I’ve had a little help from the team at What 2 Buy 4 Kids to come up with my list too. Monkey is getting more and more interested in science and experiments, but his love of all things construction certainly isn’t waning.

Construction toys in any form are great for all children and help nurture hand eye coordination, manual dexterity and problem solving skills.

I’m always on the look out for something new for Monkey to try out and the Zoob Car Designer set will go down very well. Mixing construction and a love of cars, boy heaven!  With this particular set you can make 13 different vehicles, as well as make your own wacky wheeled designs.  I know that this set will give Monkey hours of fun and get his creative talents working hard.  Zoob have a range of different kits so you can also add to your collection.

A gift guide for 7 year old boys and girls couldn’t be complete without a little bit of ageless fun.  Who doesn’t love blowing bubbles after all?

The Weird Science Bubble Experiment lets children make their own bubble solution to have bubble blowing fun. Can you hear the squeals of delight?

Being British, my son is as obsessed with the weather as his Granny is.  We’ve certainly had all sorts of weather thrown at us over the last few weeks, from extreme heat to hail storms.  We love the range of Thames and Kosmos science kits and they are perfect for kids of this age.

The Little Labs Weather Science Kit is suitable for children aged 5 years and over and includes items to help complete 10 different weather themed experiments. Whether looking at different types of clouds or how to measure wind and rain, this is a great kit for children to learn from.  We had a thunder and lightning storm here last week and a house close to friends of ours, was hit by lightning and caught fire.  Thankfully everyone was ok, but it left Monkey asking lots of questions and the What causes lightning experiment will help to answer them.

Carrying on with the weather theme, Monkey is totally fascinated with volcanoes.  Having just finished reading How to Twist a Dragon’s Tail with me, there have been even more questions relating to this geological phenomenon. The KidzLabs Volcano Making Kit is going to go down a storm, or should I say, an eruption.

Sticking with the weather theme, and something that has always brought lots of comments is the Colour Changing Cats and Dogs Umbrella.  Monkey’s never tired of using this umbrella on rainy days, and his friends are fascinated to watch the cats and dogs change colour.

If you’re looking for a game for your 7 year old, then maybe Cheeky Monkeys would be ideal.  It’s certainly been a big hit here, with my son and the cat!

Being a bit of a speed demon, my son has a number of remote-controlled vehicles, but they are all so big and storage is often awkward.  Well I’ve solved that problem with the Worlds Smallest R/C Car!

Isn’t this just the dinkiest car ever.  It’s only 5cms in length and the set comes with a set of traffic cones so you really work on your remote control navigation skills.  This is going to be a big hit here, and I have a feeling a 50-year-old father might enjoy racing this car too.

If your child likes arts and crafts then a Nutty Putty set offers something a little different and my son loves making his little creations.

Getting creative with Nutty Putty

For a child like Monkey who loves building things, I often wonder whether a career in engineering awaits him.  The Kids First Intro to Engineering Science Kit is perfect for children aged 5 years and over and features 21 different experiments and projects to complete.

Working through engineering basics, engineering on the land, engineering in the air, engineering in water, and engineering in the home the set really is a great introduction for children with a fondness for science and construction.

For a nature loving 7 year old you can’t go wrong with one of the My Living World nature sets – we are big fans here, and Worm World is something we intend to try again this year.

What would you add to a gift guide for 7 year old boys or girls?

disclosure:  we were gifted with a number of the items featured here in return for this post.

  1. This list is great! I am always searching for new books for my kids and it is so hard trying to find things in their age groups that they are also interested in.. My 11 year old actually just finished the first Harry Potter book(yea she started a little late with those, I won’t let her see the movies until she reads the books… I’m mean like that) but I have the hardest time finding stuff for my 9 year old. She is picky and hasn’t found a favorite genre yet.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
