As a child I can’t remember knowing anyone whose parents were divorced. But times change and sadly in the 21st century it’s often the case that families don’t always find it possible to stay together. I know from my own experience from my first marriage, just how traumatic divorce can be as an adult, and I can’t imagine how children cope with the emotional turmoil of their parents splitting up. Last month saw the publication of Shine: Why Don’t Moon Fairy and Sun Prince Live Together?, a hardback picture book which helps answer the ‘why’ question that children are certain to ask in this situation.
Shine: Why Don’t Moon Fairy and Sun Prince Live Together? is written by Polona Kisovec and contains some beautiful illustrations by Mark Jordan. We meet Sun Prince who becomes mesmerised by the beauty of Moon Fairy as she lights up the world at night. He takes her clothes as she bathes in the water in an attempt to bump into her.
The two meet and fall in love, spending every minute of every day and night together. They produce a miracle in the form of a tiny little star, but as time passes the light that both the Moon Fairy and Sun Prince had begins to fade. They simply cannot live together. They’ve lost their energy and their sparkle.
But they both love the little star very much and tell the star exactly that, that no matter what happens they will both always love Shine, the little star more than anything else.
Shine: Why Don’t Moon Fairy and Sun Prince Live Together? is written in a way that children will understand and it deals with a tricky and emotional situation compassionately. Aimed at children aged 4-11 years of age, we’ve enjoyed reading this together and I can see the message working well with families dealing with separation.
