iExplore Micro Monsters book – review and giveaway

I’m all for books that provide something a little different and educate my son at the same time.  The new iExplore Micro Monsters book is one of two new books to the Carlton Books iExplore series.  Using augmented reality using the free app available on iTunes and Google Play, we’ve been going on a voyage of discovery.

iExplore Micro Monsters book

The latest iExplore books, Micro Monsters and Extinct Animals, were published on 7th September and we’ve had great fun looking through the 28 page hardback iExplore Micro Monsters book since it arrived.  It’s often hard for children to realise that there’s a whole world that can only be viewed under a microscope.

In this book, you get to learn about animals such as Fleas, Eyelash Mites, and Ticks, as well as Antarctic Krill, Pseudoscorpions and the dreaded Head Lice.

The book is full of great graphics and photographs along with lots of facts for children to gain a better understanding of these tiny creatures.  Thankfully, our cat has never had fleas due to the monthly treatment he has, so my 7 year old has never seen one for real (long may that continue), so the iExplore Micro Monsters book has brought them to life for him in others way.  The book itself is engaging, through in the AR technology and he’s hooked.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, open it on your device and hold it over the Micro Monsters Activation zone (there are ten in this book) and watch the micro monster come to life.

You can make the animal leap up from the page by tapping the microscope icon and then make it move by rotating the toggle wheel.

Not only can you have lots of fun with the AR technology to make the creatures come alive, but you can also use the app to learn more about each animal too.  Move the slider on the top right corner of the screen to the left to bring up a number of different options.  There’s a quiz with multiple levels to complete, information to learn about things such as habitats and close up images of each animal.  It adds another level to the book and AR fun.

It’s also worth noting that iExplore Micro Monsters book and the AR technology work without Wi-Fi, so you can have fun on the go too.  Priced at £9.99, we both think these books are great fun as well as being educational.

To see the full range, pop over to the Carlton Books website, I’ve just noticed that they’ve got an AR How to Train Your Dragon book coming out soon, best I pop that on Monkey’s birthday list pronto!

About Over 40 and a Mum to One

I'm a Mum in my late 40′s with an 8 year old son. I had a busy life in Export Sales before my Monkey came along, but decided to become a stay at home Mum once he arrived. Now I enjoy writing my own family lifestyle and travel blog. sharing the adventures that we have as Monkey makes his journey through school. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.

  1. I would choose Ocean Monsters…it amazes me how little we know about ocean creatures as theres so much more to explore the deeper we go

  2. Micro Monsters my grandson is bug mad, and loves looking at things with his microscope, which is great as I used to love butterflies and caterpillars when I was his age

  3. Extinct Animals would be my choice. Even the thought of little creepy crawlies makes me itch. I would rather come face to face with a man eating dinosaur!

  4. I would love the my little pony one for my daughter as my son has the jurassic world one, or i would love to get the solar system one for them both.

  5. Into Deep Space because the twins are heavily into space travel games at the moment. I would like to read the brain one myself though

  6. My little boy is a huge fan of the transformers so it would have to be the Transformers: Crown City. I love the idea of the augmented reality books.

  7. I would love the Extinct Animals book for my daughter. She wants to be a zoologist when she grows up so this would be fabulous for her.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
