Word Rush

Word Rush – a game review

The girls were coming over for a curry and a catch up recently and I thought it would be a great time to try out a new game with them.  Suitable for anyone aged 8 years and over, Word Rush from Tactic Games, can be played with 2-6 players and it certainly kept us entertained.

Word Rush

Word Rush is a game for the quick-witted, it seems simple until you try it out.  The game comes with a board, scoring board, 50 double-sided category cards, 100 letter cards, 6 coloured play pieces and an egg timer.

Word Rush

The game is very easy to set up, basically put the game board in the centre of the table, place the hourglass scoring board next to it, with relevant play pieces on the Yellow Start section.  Shuffle the Category cards and then the Letter cards. Place the Letter cards face down on the table with the category cards next to them.

Word Rush

The player with the longest name starts, in our case it was A, known as Queen of the Board games.  The player turns over the sand timer and quickly deals out 9 letter cards and places them across the board.  They then pick up the top category card, turn it over and place it on the ? spot. They must then call out a word starting with one of the letters shown on the board that ties up with the category shown.  So if the Category was shops, and there was a letter T on the board, the player could call out Tesco, move the sand timer to that space and turn it over.  Play then moves to the next player who must come up with another word relating to the category that starts with a different letter on the board.

Word Rush

Play continues around the players as each takes their turn to name a word until the timer runs out.  The player who is playing when the sand timer runs out has lost the round and moves their play piece one space down the scoring board.  The category card and the letter cards are discarded and the loser from the previous round gets to start the next round.  That was me, a lot!

Word Rush

We all soon realised that Word Rush  is one of those games that sounds so much easier than when you actually play it.  You know when you watch a game show on TV and you end up shouting the answers at the screen, why don’t they know the answer?  Well that was us, playing this game.  You can think of every answer under the sun relating to a category, other than ones starting the letters in front of you, or at least that was my excuse.

It’s a really fun game, which gave us lots of laughs.  Play continues until there is only one player who isn’t ‘out’ on the scoring card.  There’s also a shorter version of the game shown on the instructions provided, and I think I’ll be adapting the game to play with my soon to be 8 year old son.

If you just wanted a bit of fun, you could really play without the scoring card and just laugh at each other struggling to get the grey matter working effectively.  Word Rush got the thumbs up from us and I can see it being a big hit over the Christmas period as families battle it out.  Priced at £19.99 it’s available from all good toy retailers and I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below for your reference.
