Hollie and Figgs

Hollie and Figgs – book reviews and giveaway

I’ve got a couple of delightful books to share with you this afternoon in the Hollie and Figgs series.  The books are written by Annette Sharman and are aimed at children aged 5-8 years of age.

Hollie and Figgs

The first book in the series is Hollie and Figgs Magical Adventures where we get to meet eight year old Hollie and her beloved cat Figgs.  They’ve been inseparable since Figgs was a kitten and when the family have to move to a new home, and Hollie to a new school, it’s Figgs that she turns to for comfort and support.

As you all know, my own eight year old son loves our cat Brewster, although I’m not entirely sure that’s a mutual feeling at times.  But I’ve loved cats pretty much all my life and can remember that comfort my cat Lady and her brand new kittens gave me when we moved from Surrey to Oxfordshire when I was fourteen.  I’m a firm believer that pets are an important part of family life and good for children to be around.  Although I’m not sure that any of my cats are quite like Figgs.

Hollie is struggling in her new school, without her old friends and feels so lonely.  She wishes that she could go off on an adventure with Figgs and maybe she can.  It turns out that this little moggy is no ordinary cat, he’s got a bit of a secret, he’s magical.  Before Hollie knows it her bedroom rug turns into a magic carpet and Hollie and Figgs are off on a magical adventure which takes them to the faraway land of the Hippogoblins.  The firm friends meet the King and Queen and is invited to stay for a magical afternoon tea.  The King and Queen have a daughter, Princess Lulubud who’s incredibly unhappy, could Hollie become her friend? Before long the Princess and Hollie are firm friends and Hollie is asked to attend a ball in honour of the Princess.

Hollie and Figgs Magical Adventures is a lovely story about friendship and believing in yourself.  I don’t want to ruin the story line but Hollie’s adventures with the Hippogoblins helps both the Princess and Hollie when she goes back to school.  The book also comes with something extra, which I’m not going to divulge, but kids will like it.
The second book in the Hollie and Figgs series is called Hollie and Figgs The Missing Rainbow.  We meet up again with the girl and her magical cat as Hollie is getting excited about attending the forthcoming ball back in the land of the Hippogoblins.

Hollie has been dreaming about what she’ll wear to the ball and suddenly notices a tiny tiara has appeared by the side of her bed.  Before she knows it she’s whisked away on her magic carpet along with her beloved Figgs. A new adventure awaits, she presumes she’s heading for the land of the Hippogoblins but the pair end up in a green and murky land close by called Chippogoblin Land.  They get to meet Thomasin who has been sent by the King to find them and explain what’s happened to all the colour.  A grey cloud has appeared over the land and the rainbow has disappeared.

Can Hollie and Figgs come to the rescue and save the day?  The ball has been cancelled so Hollie is determined to try. Along the way we get to meet new characters, Smudgers a large blue furry friend and Prince Zulubud who might know something about the cloud.

This is another lovely story, again with a little surprise enclosed for young reader to discover.

We’ve enjoyed reading both books, and you can find out more about the series on the Hollie and Figgs website, along with details of who the main characters are based on.  The books are priced at £7.99 each and I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate links below for easy ordering.
