New Wildlife Animals from Schleich

My son loves animals as much as I do and he’s currently working towards his Animal Carer badge with Cubs.  He’s in charge of keeping our cat Brewster fed and watered for three months, he’s got to keep a record of birds we see in our garden and we’ll be visiting a wildlife park to learn more about one of his favourite animals soon.  An important part of forming that love of animals has been in the small world play he’s enjoyed since he was tiny.  Being able to use model animals in imaginary play scenarios has fuelled his adventures and helped him reenact visits to farms, zoos and safari parks.  All help him learn more about the animals he loves.  We’ll be extending that knowledge thanks to the new Wildlife Animals from Schleich that have recently been launched.

These new Wildlife Animals from Schleich are a great way for children to play up close with animals they might not come into contact with in real life.  We’re a family of Big Cat lovers and the new Lion figure from Schleich is so life-like, he’s a little less shy than the ones we’ve tried to spot at Whipsnade Zoo and West Midlands Safari Park in recent adventures!

We’ve been following the Big Cats series on BBC One recently and the arrival of this male lion will be sparking new adventures as we enjoy half term.  We might even take him with us to see some of his relatives at the zoo.

My living room often resembles a farm or a zoo.  I gave up trying to persuade my son that these wooden blocks actually belonged to their own game a long time ago!  They are far more useful as pens for his various animals.  joining his new lion is this rather handsome Indian Rhino who appears to be settling in nicely.

If you’ve read the blog for a long time you’ll know that we have a special place in our hearts for Rhinos and they always feature close to the top of my son’s ‘must see’ list on any wildlife park adventure.  These beautiful beasts don’t get appreciated enough as far as we’re concerned and we’ve been so lucky to see a few baby rhinos over the last couple of years, on our days out.  These visits have taught my son to appreciate these great beasts and his new Indian Rhino will be introduced to the rest of his rhino herd soon.

There was much excitement when his Black Bull arrived, because for my son he’s so much more than just a black bull.  He’s something he connected with his grandparents who live in Spain.  Meet Juan the Spanish Black Bull.

When Juan is not roaming around our garden or causing chaos in our living room, he can be found as a classic symbol of all things Spanish.  We’ve never seen a bullfight but we’ve visited a number of bull rings and their museums since my parents moved to Spain over a decade ago.  My son is aware of how important these animals are with the Spanish culture and he’s more than happy to now have one of his own.

Towards the end of last year my son came out of school full of excitement.  Mummy, L brought her horse into school today!  We got to get really close to him and everything.  We’ve got a couple of friends who own horses but we’ve never got closer than stroking them with a fence between us.  So he really enjoyed the opportunity to get a little closer.  This new interest might have also come from spending time in Lambourne last year visiting one of the famous race horse stables.  We’re both rather taken with his Pintabian Mare, who comes complete with braided mane and horseshoes.

As with all Schleich animals, this horse is so beautifully detailed and you could very easily create an animal tracks challenge using these animals pushed into plasticine or play-doh.  Unlike other plastic animals, Schleich ensure that their figures are accurate from tip to toe, as you can see here.  You get what you pay for.

The range of new Wildlife Animals from Schleich are aimed at children aged 3 years and over, and the full range can be found on the Schleich website.  We’ve been buying these figures as well as receiving for review, since my son was three.  He’s now eight, the animals have had hours of playing with, and they are all still as good as new.  They are a good quality range that we’d happily endorse even without the blog.

disclosure:  we were sent the items mentioned in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I love the quality of the Schleich range too – the animals are so realistic. My son used to set up Safari parks in our living room, when he was younger, sorting the animals into their different enclosures (using wooden blocks like your son), and creating traffic jams of toy cars as they drove through the Safari park!!! You can’t beat imaginative play can you?

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
