Project 365 2018 Week 9 Day 56 – 62

Sunday 25th February – Day 56

Project 365 2018 Week 9

The sun was shining but it was bitterly cold again.  We’d picked up details of a number of local walks when we’d visited Calke Abbey yesterday and we decided to pop along to Dimminsdale Nature Reserve.  We’d driven past the car park alongside Staunton Harold Reservoir countless times over the year and had no idea there was a nature reserve close by, as the reservoir itself isn’t walkable.  It was a little hidden gem and we’ll explore in more detail when we next stay with my friend.

After a cuppa it was time to head back home to get ready for the week ahead.

Monday 26th February – Day 57

Project 365 2018 Week 9

Brewster had the right idea.  Monkey and I were tired after our busy weekend, and it was so cold on the walk to school.  I got home and dug out my big black hat, with the weather forecast for this week, it’s time to wrap up warm.  I got the shopping done and posted something for Mum by airmail for Mother’s Day in case the snow really does hit us as hard as they’re saying.

I was in school for the afternoon listening to the kids reading.  It was their teacher’s birthday and at the end of the day they all sang her Happy Birthday.  Clearly the rest of the class like her as much as my son does (he’s actually written her a birthday note – yes WRITTEN!!).  I tried not to wince when she said she was 25.

Cubs went well and apparently I’ve got a surprise coming for Mother’s Day.  Nice.

Tuesday 27th February – Day 58

Project 365 2018 Week 9

Monkey is back to sneaking in bed with me pretty much every night again.  We woke up this morning and I wasn’t sure I wanted to open the curtains but we’d had no snow overnight.  It was very cold on the walk to school and it’s been trying to snow on and off all day, but not really achieving anything.

Parent’s Evening went well.  My son and his teacher have really clicked which is such a relief with a child who struggles to open up to others.  He’s worked really hard on his maths, and is getting additional support in all areas.  He’s very lucky.  Apparently he’s now joining in in class and answering questions when asked.  Big step forward for him.  I think school will often be a challenge for him, but he tries hard and I can’t really ask for more.

Wednesday 28th February – Day 59

Project 365 2018 Week 9

Another day when it tried to snow and failed, except for the walk home from school, which was blizzard like but again, didn’t settle.  With the weather warnings coming in thick and fast I headed out long enough to get Brewster a bag of food and then got on with housework at home.  It’s bitterly cold out there.

I was ushered into class at school pick up as my son had face palmed the playground when the kids had been out running.  They were still cleaning him up, but he’d been really brave and not cried at all.  He’s got a nasty graze on his arm and others on his knee, nose, chin and around his mouth.  Apparently he also ended up with mud in his mouth – only my son.  Anyway, he could still walk and I promised him ice cream for pudding at dinner time to cheer him up.  It was also the book fair ahead of tomorrow’s World Book Day and he decided to put his £1 voucher towards this. A book we’re both looking forward to reading.

My college class for tomorrow has been cancelled, will we wake up to snow?

Thursday 1st March – Day 60

Project 365 2018 Week 9

Well it’s snowing but it’s very fine so taking ages to settle, it has also minus 4 but with a biting wind.  Freezing!  It snows all day but really was nowhere near the issue that others have been having. But that wasn’t going to stop my son having fun after school.  But he didn’t stay out long because even he thought it was too cold!

World Book Day and my son went to school as Peter from Peter’s Railway.

I got a message after Monkey had gone to bed to say that school would be closed in the morning.  No need to set the alarm!

Friday 2nd March – Day 61

Project 365 2018 Week 9

I’d had to let Brewster out for a toilet stop at 3am and it was snowing well and he ran out and back in again.  I fully expected to see a foot of snow when we woke up, but there was barely any more than we’d gone to bed with.

My son was overjoyed to be off school but was happy to stay indoors.  Not ideal with a father who didn’t get in from work until 4am.  My son doesn’t do quiet.

We’ve played with Lego, watched a film and finally the snow started to come down heavily this afternoon.  We’ll be staying put for the foreseeable, but snowman building may well be on the cards tomorrow.

We’ve also done a bit of bird spotting from my son’s bedroom window and saw this cheeky squirrel.  Luckily he stayed put long enough for me to change lens on my camera.

Saturday 3rd March – Day 62

Project 365 2018 Week 9

No more snow today although the sky is pure white.  It’s actually plus 1 for the first time in a week and the snow in the garden has started to melt.  We live in a really flat area, but that wasn’t going to stop Monkey enjoying time on his sledge this morning, even if it meant I had to pull him up and down our road and round the garden.  He’s easily pleased.

When we needed to warm up we came inside for lunch, and then had fun making electrical circuits with a Light Up set I’d got him ages ago and never tried.  Then it was on to a Science set we’ve been sent for review and some Gross Science fun, think farts and poop!

The afternoon is being spent watching Steam Train programmes we’ve recorded in the week.  My son’s idea of heaven.

  1. It sounds like you’ve had the exact same weather that we’ve had! It sounds like Monkey’s parents’ evening went really well, no wonder you were pleased. Lovely pictures of Monkey (and the squirrel!) in the snow.

  2. That reserve looks lovely and glad parents evening went well. Great capture of the squirrel.

Didn’t realise there was a sequel to Railway children. Will have to get hold of a copy

  3. Such a wonderful happy photo of Monkey on the sledge. I showed Eddie your short video on FB with Monkey and Dad in the garden, he immediately wanted to do the same, when I said we don’t have a sledge, he was saying everyone is having fun, except me. Didn’t stop him playing with his Dad in the garden, throwing snowballs. 🙂 Lovely photo of Brewster too. And big well done to Monkey for working hard in school!

  4. hehehe! It makes me wince when I find out the age of people teaching my children….My youngest girls teacher was still in school when my girl was born. Eek! I’m not knocking her, she is an amazing teacher.
It does sound like a good parents evening….It sounds like your boy is doing well.
It looks like your boy had fun in his sledge.

  5. Lovely squirrel shot. I always have the wrong lens on when I need the camera quickly. Glad Monkey had a good parents evening and had the chance to ejoy the snow.

  6. Ooo which channel do you record steam train shows on? I bet Aiden would love those too. Poor Monkey with his fall but so nice to hear he is getting on at school and was super brave. #365

  7. Glad you’ve had some snow to enjoy. Love the squirrel shot – you did well to get that.

  8. It looks like you had a nice polite helping and Monkey looks very happy on his sledge. I really am ready for warm weather now. I hope the Mother’s Day surprise is wonderful 🙂

  9. I’m always made to feel like I’m some kind of freak with my forward planning, but good to see someone else thinking ahead to ensure their mother’s day gift arrived in time, did it?

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
