Walking the town walls of Conwy

Walking the town walls of Conwy

My OH had booked us a few days away in North Wales over the Easter holidays to celebrate my 50th birthday and we arrived in the late afternoon.  It was too late in the day to really enjoy a visit to the castle so we settled on spending some time walking the town walls of Conwy before finding somewhere to enjoy a birthday meal.

We found somewhere to park right next to the town walls which was a perfect base. We soon discovered that by walking the town walls of Conwy we would be able to walk above move of the town as the walls are fairly well intact.  This is actually 1.2km of the town walls to walk and apparently it is one of the most complete sets in Europe.  That was enough to get my intrepid explorer interested and off we went.

We decided to walk along the walls, down to the harbour and then find somewhere for dinner in Conwy town, before walking the rest of the walls and completing the circular walk back to the car.

As you would expect with walls that date back to the late 1200’s, there are parts that are a little uneven but there are safety rails to hold onto, and my rather wary son was more than happy to spend time walking the town walls of Conwy.

Even on a grey and gloomy day we had some lovely views across the town and towards the castle, and there was plenty of time to just stop and admire the view as we went on our way.

I might have also reminded my OH that I wanted a photo with my son, always trying to remember to get shots for my Mummy and Me project when I have someone with me to take the shots!

Walking the town walls of Conwy gave me another chance to see my ever changing son, his growing confidence in new situations is so lovely to witness.  This way!

As you reach the harbour you come back down to street level and the lobster pots were a reminder that the boats we were looking at were most likely to be working fishing boats.

We may not have had time to explore the castle itself but my son was pleased to get another stamp in his National Trust passport as we found Aberconwy House in the town centre.

There’s also a train station in Conwy, so there was no chance that my son wouldn’t want to do a bit of train spotting as we spent the late afternoon walking the town walls of Conwy.

There was a rather lovely archway to admire too.

We got to see the castle from a different angle.

Before our tour guide was off again, this way.

He did have to be reminded at times to stop and look out, and was so excited when he spotted what we think was some sort of crane.

But he was soon striding out again.

It was such a shame about the weather, I bet on a clear day the mountains would look really spectacular, we just had to use our imagination.

And enjoy a pop of colour whenever we saw it.

We weren’t sure if we’d come across some sort of chapel at one point, if anyone knows, then please let me know.

It certainly added some extra interest as we were walking the town walls of Conwy.

We were soon heading back towards the point we’d started at, but there were still some views to enjoy along the way.

I’d definitely like to return on a brighter day to really see Conwy in all it’s glory.  I was last there over 25 years ago on a sunny August day, so know who pretty the location is.

Where next then son?  Just time for a trip to the beach before bedtime I think, and off we headed, back to the car, and off to Llandudno for an hour before going back to the hotel for the night.

As a total aside, if you’re ever in Conwy, and looking for somewhere nice to eat, I can recommend The Erskine Arms, we had a wonderful celebratory meal there.  The mussels were devine.

Have you visited Conwy and walked the walls?

  1. WOW it looks really interesting. We went here a few years back but I never got to walk around the walls as we had the dogs with us!! What fabulous views… Popping over from #CountryKids xx

  2. What a beautiful town to explore and all those stunning walls surrounding it too. I used to visit when I was about Monkey’s age as my Mum grew up there but I only have odd memories. I do remember the bridge, harbour area and the castle and crossing through the town walls but I had no idea you could go on such an interesting walk or that the walls stretched so far. Such a shame about the weather, it looks cold compared to the sunshine of today, but at least it was dry and gave you the opportunity for a wonderful explore and so much to spot along the way.

Thank you for sharing with me on #CountryKids

  3. That looks like a fab day out despite the grey weather, and that railway arch is fascinating. You did so much, great to get an NT stamp along the way too! #CountryKids

  4. What a wonderful way to explore the town and I love all the different views from the town walls – especially those over the harbour. Monkey looks like he was a very good tour guide! 🙂 #countrykids

  5. We are hoping to visit Conwy later this year to see the Castle and I actually didnt know there were town walls like this – they are amazing, what a great way to see Conwy, 100% doing this when we visit
