Creating stories with Dixit

Creating stories with Dixit – a game review

We’ve recently been trying out a board game with a difference and been creating stories with Dixit along the way.  We received this game from Asmodee UK as part of their Board Game Club.

Creating stories with Dixit

Creating stories with Dixit is a game aimed at those aged 8 and over, for 3-6 players.  The game comes with a the game board, which is an integral part of the storage box, 84 playing cards, 36 voting cards, number from 1-6 in 6 different colours, 6 wooden rabbit playing pieces and instructions.

It’s a very different game from anything we’ve tried before, the idea is to create story sentences from your playing cards without the other players knowing which card you are referring to.

Each player takes it in turns to be the story-teller, picking their card and saying their story sentence out loud. The other players then give the story-teller one of their cards that fits to the sentence provided, these cards are shuffled with the story tellers cards, and placed face up in front of the players.

They then use their voting tokens to decide which card they think was the story tellers.  Points are then awarding to those players who correctly pick the right card.  You can receive points if someone picked your card too.  The winner is the player who is furthest around the scoring track when all cards have been played.  The scoring rules did seem a little strange to us.

We did enjoy creating stories with Dixit, using the playing cards, but in a different way than the game was intended.  For us having a game that requires more than 2 players is often tricky.  Daddy P is rarely home, and on the one day he is free, we are often away from home. It’s really not possible to play the game traditionally with two players, we tried doubling up, but when you know that half the cards are yours to start with, it makes the whole voting/scoring part of the game a bit pointless.

So we improvised.  The cards as so beautiful and offer all sorts of imaginative ideas for story telling.  We each had 6 cards and took turns in creating stories for the other player, using as many of our own cards as we could.  If we could make up a really good story using all 6 cards, we’d move our play piece 6 places, put all 6 cards to one side and draw 6 more from the pile.  If we could only make a story using say, 2 cards, then we’d move 2 places, discard those 2 cards and draw 2 more from the pile.  The first player to the end of the track won the game.

We also played a game where we didn’t use the board at all.  One player would pick a card from the pile and start a story, then play would pass to the other player, they would pick the next card up and see where the story would take them, and so on, for as many cards as possible.  Both versions are great for encouraging creativity.

We’ve had lots of fun creating stories with Dixit, this way, and hopefully when my son has friends over, we can try playing the conventional version of this board game.

I’ve attached my Amazon Affiliate link below in case you fancy trying Dixit for yourselves.
