Enjoying the Classic & Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel

It’s wonderful when you get the opportunity to enjoy a great annual event, which just happens to take place on your doorstep.  We’ve been enjoying the Classic & Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel, since the first Flywheel Festival took place at Bicester Heritage a few years ago.  Bringing together motor racing cars from across the eras, with flying displays featuring Tiger Moths and the like, this is a family day out which has become a permanent fixture on our calendar.

We normally visit the event on the Sunday, when we can go as a family, but with a family Christening this year, it meant that my son and I got to spend the Saturday enjoying the Classic & Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel together instead.  Whilst we missed the various aeroplanes flying out at the end of the show on Sunday, we still had plenty to keep us entertained throughout the day.

Set in the grounds of the old RAF Bicester, the event hosts a range of cars, motorbikes and even trikes, which can be seen on static display and then on the track as they take it in turns to do a couple of laps per session.

If you arrive at the start of the day like we did, you also get to see drivers participating for the first time, doing their installation lap so they can get a feel for the track layout.

We did get to see Derek Bell MBE racing around in a 1965 Porsche 911 2-litre racing car, but weren’t in the right place at the right time to get his autograph unfortunately.  My son was very lucky to have got Sir Stirling Moss to autograph his programme a few years ago.

There are also a selection of aircraft on static display along with those taking part in the afternoon aerial displays.  We always enjoy the watching both the motor cars and the aeroplanes and you never miss anything as the action moves from the track to the skies and back again throughout the day.

With it being the 100 anniversary of the RAF, there were WW2 veterans enjoying the Classic & Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel and sharing their memories.

A highlight of our day was watching the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with their Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane fly past, and later in the day we also got to see the Dakota fly by too.

As well as the track and aerial action, you can wander around the Bicester Heritage site and a number of the small motorsport businesses working there have their doors open, so you can get a really good feel of what is happening on site.

I’ve still not managed to convince my son to have a tank ride, maybe next year! It does look like fun.

We always enjoy the Bremont Great War Display Team and marvel at how planes have changed over the years.

There was also the Tiger Moth display team Tiger Nine to enjoy, as well as aerobatics from former British Female Aerobatic Champion Lauren Richardson.

We spent another wonderful day out enjoying the Classic & Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel, and can thoroughly recommend the event.  Next years event will take place on 22nd and 23rd June 2019, and it’s in my diary already!

Maybe pin this post for later as a reminder.

  1. Now all my kids would love this. What a great day out and even better that it is close to home for you. I bet Daddy Over 40 was sorry to miss out! Did I tell you I won a tank driving event at one of my old work team days out? Driving a tank is awesome, I hope Monkey gives it a go next year. I’d have loved the WW2 planes, they always fascinate me.

Thank you for sharing on #CountryKids
