Exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo

Exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo (invited to review)

On Saturday we got to have the perfect day out for us, one that involved Lego and wild animals.  What more can you ask for?  We got to spend time exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo which opened that day, and is now running until 7th January 2019. The zoo in Warwickshire can be found just off junction 11 of the M42 and has plenty to entertain the family.

There are over 70 life-sized Lego brick animals from 27 different species dotted around the zoo, which you can discover by following the free Safari Spotters Trail map.  Over 880,000 Lego bricks have been used  by the Bright Bricks, the professional Lego builders, to create the various animals which can be found around the zoo.  Whether it be the four metre tall Elephant or the Scorpions, there’s lots to admire as you spend time exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo.

I was interested to see if exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo would hold my son’s attention as he’d seen the Great Brick Safari last September at Marwell Zoo.  But he loved it just as much, if not more so.  There were changes to some of the animals on display, and I think just seeing them all in a totally different setting caused just as much excitement as before.  In fact he was even more curious and took in more of the finer details of the builds this time around.

My son had a few favourites from our time exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo.  Hop and Skip the Kangaroos fascinated him, especially when he spotted the Joey.

The real Gorillas are often a little camera shy on our visits, so he enjoyed getting a better look at Gale and Gorman in Lego form.

It’s amazing to think that 271,739 bricks were needed to build Earl Grey the Elephant – he really is rather wonderful, don’t you think.

My personal favourites are Pearl and Polina the Macaws, they are just beautiful, much like their real life friends.

It’s no secret that I love my big cats and we were both rather excited when we found Tenzin the Tiger as we also discovered that real Tigers will be joining Twycross Zoo next year.  We cannot wait to see those.

As well as the Great Brick Safari trail itself, children can also enjoy the Brick Pit inside the Explorer Cafe, where they can have fun making all sorts of Lego creations.  Also, for a small fee, they can make their own Lego brick animal which they can take home.  With Halloween around the corner my son got to make and take away a Frankenstein head.

You cal also take a selfie in the unique Lego brick Safari Jeep to get you in the mood for all that Twycross Zoo has to offer.  My expedition leader was far too busy concentrating on the track to look at the camera!

We both enjoyed exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo as we went to see the different animals the zoo has to offer.  The snow leopards live right by Himalaya, which also houses a couple of eateries, a chargeable soft play and the shop.  If you get the chance to sit at one of the window seats, you might have some company.

Twycross Zoo has a number of Amur Leopards and they are always one of my favourite animals to see on our visits.

For my son, no visit to the zoo is complete without at least three trips to see the giraffes.  He really does adore them and on our last visit we got to listen to the keepers talk in the giraffe house, which is really interesting.

The zoo is home to a large number of primates and the Chimpanzee Eden and Gibbon Forest have become favourites for us to really get up close to the various species.

Every visit brings new delights, and seeing an animal for the first time is always a thrill, for me as much as my eight year old son.  On this visit we got to see the Yellow Throated Marten and he was a really handsome chap.

We had a wonderful time exploring the Great Brick Safari at Twycross Zoo and seeing all the animals, whether they be Lego or real.  There’s also a lot of Halloween themed activities going on at Twycross Zoo, you can find out more here.

Will you be visiting Twycross Zoo and trying out the Great Brick Safari with your family?

  1. Those brick animals are incredible, I wonder how long it must have taken to create them? Moving them can’t be too easy either, I guess they will stay at Twycross for a while now! #CountryKids

  2. That Great Brick Safari is a great idea and looks fantastic. Some of them seemed to be inside the animal enclosures but I assume that was my eyes! Good to know that your son enjoyed the trail despite having seen it before. Thanks for sharing with us at#CountryKids

  3. The Great Brick Safari looks amazing. I love that all the animals are life-sized. The elephant is very impressive and those macaws are beautiful. Being able to make your own animal or Halloween themed item looks like fun. Love all your photos of the animals – both brick based and real. The leopards are just beautiful. I have a soft spot for the giraffes too. That talk must have been very interesting. Thank you for sharing your day out with #CountryKids
