When you’re little, you’ll often have a kind of vision, or assumption, or even a dream about what you want to do with your life as you get older. And sometimes, that vision pans out in front of you. But that doesn’t always happen. Because sometimes, you may find that actually, you need to work a lot harder, and be a lot more intentional about what you’re doing, in order for you to make this happen. Because that’s the thing about life, unless you plan for what you want, and you align your actions to achieve that goal, it will forever stay as a dream.

Now, one area of your life that this will quite often apply to is your career. Because if you feel as if you want to be able to follow your dream path or enjoy a career in a specific field, you have to train for it. You have to get the skills and experiences in order to follow that path. And sometimes, the career path that you end up on isn’t what you first imagined. Or, it could be that you start down one path, but then your priorities change. And this is very much the case when you become a mother. Because you won’t always want to be part of the corporate world when you are a mum!

Instead, you’ll often want to choose a career that suits your new lifestyle as a mother. But not only that, when you’re thinking about making a change, it’s also the perfect way for you to then think about those dreams you had as a child, and how you might like to accomplish them now. So let’s take a look at how you can find the perfect career that might suit your new life as a mum.

Think About The Lifestyle You Want

The first point is absolutely crucial. Because if you want to be able to choose a career that suits your lifestyle, you need to know what kind of life you want in the first place. So really think about it. What’s the dream? What’s the ideal for you here? Think about how you want to spend your days. Go through in your mind and pinpoint why you’d want to do each day. Then this is going to help you to decide that you want to do with your career.

Consider The Time You Have

So next, you’re going to want to look at the time you have. Yes, you might even want to work on your time management here so that you can add more hours to your day. But that’s not all. Think about whether you have more free time in the early mornings, the evenings, or the daytime. Do you want to go out to work in the day or do something from home in the evenings? Try to see what you can realistically do and match that up with what you want to do.

Look To Your Skills

Now, you’re going to want to think about what you can actually do. And, of course, this is all about your skills. What are you good at? What do you naturally want to do? How do you want to spend your time? What are your strengths? You will easily be able to work out what you should be doing here, so that you can eliminate unsuitable paths, and narrow down on some more suited careers for you.

Look To Your Experience

But also, you’re going to want to consider your experience here. Now, work experience doesn’t always matter. You can often land careers through your connections, through your skills, your knowledge – all of it. But, if you know that you have key experience in a set industry or role or something that you can work with, make sure that you use this too.

Know What You Want

So when you’ve gone through each of these ideas and steps, the next thing that you need to do is put it all together. So finally, ask yourself – what do you want? What do all of the points above tell you? Is there a career choice that is going to stand out to you here? Make sure that you know what you want out of life, and then you should pick that career and start moving in that particular direction.

Do Some Research

Now, you need to take a look at what is actually available and what the careers look like. Sure, you might have an idea about what you want to do here, but you need to narrow it down and get serious about what that career choice looks like and how you’re going to be able to get yourself involved in it.

Improve Your Knowledge

So the next thing is that you might want to top up what you already know. If you know that you want to move into a certain field and you need to be qualified, then get qualified. Or it could be that you’re looking for an online MBA in the UK so that you can move into management or build a business? No matter what you want to do, it’s important for you to make that decision and just get started.

Network

Another really great thing that you can do here, is to network. Meeting people, putting yourself out there, and connecting with a ton of people can really help you to open up new opportunities. Sure, it can feel daunting to network as a mum when you’re at home or you’re limited on time, but you can do it. So make sure that you’re just taking a leap here, and looking to learn as much as you can.

Read

So the next thing is that you’re going to want to pick up some of the best and most influential books on business. And it doesn’t matter what kind of career you want, because these books are going to fuel your mind and ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills you need to do well. And, if you do really want to launch your own thing, this is going to really help you too.

Do You Own Thing

But that’s not all. Because when it comes to your career, you can definitely start to do your own thing. You do not have to go out into the working world. For this, you’re going to want to build a business in the time that you have, and really work for it. Get yourself a work space, open your laptop, and use the points that you’ve worked through above to make this happen.

Sell Yourself

But then also, you absolutely need to make sure that you are confident enough to sell yourself. This could be in a job interview so that you’re able to get the job that you want. Or it could be that you need to sell yourself as an entrepreneur to get the jobs that you want and to win pitches. It may even be that you need to get a portfolio together or a LinkedIn profile looking great. But either way, you need to make sure that you can sell yourself in your career.

Customize As You Go

But then, don’t just feel as if you have to start off in one way and stick to that process. If you find that you’re perhaps not all that sure on the decisions that you have made so far, don’t sweat it. Because you can make changes as you go along. Sure, this really does apply to those of you that decide to go self-employed, but it can work for other career paths too. Because life is always changing, and you can always aim for new roles, positions, and promotions.

So there you have it. This really doesn’t have to be hard. Sure, at first, it might be overwhelming for you. It might be really tough for you to work out how you’re going to create a career that you love that allows you to have a balance. But it doesn’t have to be. As you can see from the steps above, if you just think about your life, and what you want your ideal lifestyle to look like. If you want to make sure that you’re able to be at home when you want to be, and you do work that fulfills you, you can. A balance is so much easier to achieve than you may first think!

So what are you waiting for? Now that you know what options you have, and how you can create a job and career path that is going to be best for you, it’s time to take action. Because that’s the idea of all of this – you need to take action. You need to change your habits and step out of your comfort zones. So go forth, create a career that you love, and really start to enjoy a new style of life with your family.
