As you are all well aware, my nine-year old son loves Cressida Cowell and her How to Train Your Dragon series of books. We’ve also watched the three films and over the last couple of weeks he’s been having fun with the How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World toys range from Spin Master.

We’ve received the Lights and Sounds Toothless, Fire breathing Toothless and Lightfury with Hiccup figure sets. Each of the sets are aimed at children aged 4 years and over.

The Lightfury is a new dragon who we are introduced to in the new How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World film.  The Lightfury in this set has poseable front legs and if you push the back legs together, her wings flap.

The Hiccup figure that comes with this set is dressed in dragon scale armour as he does in the How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World film, and he comes with a removable flaming sword too.  His legs, arms and head are all poseable so he can go into battle to save his beloved dragons at any moment.

The next of the How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World toys range from Spin Master we’ve received is the Deluxe Lights and Sound Toothless.

This Toothless figure comes complete with 3 x LR44 batteries, so he’s ready for action straight out of the packaging.

This is a really lovely looking Toothless and my son thought he looked really impressive.  You turn him on on his underbelly and then you are meant to clip in his retractable wings, press the button on his spine and his wing s will pop open, he’ll light up and roar.  His legs can also be posed.

The lights and sounds work perfectly on our Toothless but unfortunately we can’t get the pegs on the bottom of the wings to stay in the holes on the back of Toothless at all.  So for us, the pop open wings element of this toy, doesn’t work.  I’ve checked with other reviewers and some have had no issues at all, some have found that sometimes the wings stay in the holes, sometimes not.  It’s a shame that the design doesn’t seem quite right as the concept is great.

The real beast in our collection of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden  World toys range from Spin Master is the 50cm long giant Fire Breathing Toothless.

He really does look the part.  You will need 3 x AAA batteries to see him operating to his full potential.  He comes in two pieces that snap together, water dropper, spare foam container and two projectiles.

The batteries fit in the underside of Toothless, fill the water dropper with water and drip into the reservoir under the seat on his back.  we’ve had to fill the dropper a couple of times to fully dampen the sponge inside the reservoir. Close the stopper, turn him on underneath and you are ready to begin your fire-breathing adventures.

Press Toothless’s left ear down and watch him light up and start breathing fire (steam).  It’s really rather fab and it’s been keeping my son and his friends well entertained recently.

The other feature of this particular toy is that he should fire plasma blast projectiles.  The projectile slots inside a hole inside Toothless’s mouth, but make sure you fit the projectile with the hook facing down, or it will not work.  It doesn’t tell you that in the instruction booklet.  Once you’ve inserted the projectile properly, and turned Toothless on, you should press down on his right ear and as well as smoke, his jaw should open and the projectile should fire.

I say ‘should’ because unfortunately our Toothless doesn’t fire the projectile unless we hold his jaw wide open.  If either my son or I press down on his ear only, the jaw doesn’t open wide enough and the projectile gets stuck in his mouth.  But if we hold his jaw open, he works brilliantly.  Once we’d sussed that out my son was happy, and he’s not that bothered about holding the jaw as well as the ear.  If I’d bought this though, I think I’d be rather unhappy that one of the key features didn’t work properly.  It’s a shame, because the fire-breathing element is great. We may have an issue with our Toothless, but again, I’ve checked with other reviewers and they don’t seem to be having the same issue as us.

The wings on this Toothless pull out to give him an impressing wing span of 56cms and he has bioluminescent colouring, just like he does in the film.

For added play potential we’ve added the Hiccup from our Lightfury set so that he can ride around on his beloved friend.
