Top Transport Museums across the UK

Following on from my recent post highlighting some of our wonderful steam train railways across the country, today I thought I’d share some of the top Transport Museums across the UK.  With a son who is mad about vehicles of any description, we are always on the lookout for different museums to visit.

Bristol

We loved our visit to Bristol a few years ago and Lucy at The Parent Game reminds us just how great M Shed is.

For anyone who enjoys aviation and has an interest in tanks then we can thoroughly recommend a trip to IWM Duxford.  We’ve been twice now and it’s somewhere we really enjoy spending time.

If you’re visiting the Lake District then Joanne at Kids Days Out Reviews recommends the Lakeland Motor Museum.

Derbyshire

For all things tram related then you need to head to the Crich Tramway Village.  We visited towards the end of the autumn to enjoy their evening lit service which we still talk about now.

Dorset

Somewhere I can remember visiting as a child is the Bovington Tank Museum, we’ve had it on our to-do list with my son for a couple of years, and I really need to make it happen after reading Cath’s post from Bakes Bikes and Boys.

Greater Manchester

Sticking with the tram theme, Jen at My Mummys Pennies recommends the Heaton Park Tramway Museum which she describes as a lovely hidden gem and free to visit too! She also recommends The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester which has a Power Hall and Air and Space Hall as well as a steam railway.

Gloucestershire

We’ve been to Bourton-on-the-Water lots of times over the years but I’m not sure if we’ve been to Cotswold Motor Museum with my son.  Emma at Bubba Blue and Me shares her thoughts on her visit.

Hampshire

Somewhere I remember visiting as a child with my own parents is Beaulieu Motor Museum in the New Forest.  We visited last year and my son loved looking at the cars and riding the monorail, again and again!  it a post I still have to write-up.

You might have spotted my post about things to do in Southampton with kids.  During our visit, we visited Solent Sky and learned all about aviation in Southampton and Hampshire in general.  It’s a fascinating place to explore.

London

We’ve visited the London Transport Museum a couple of times, the most recent being in January this year. Located in the heart of Covent Garden, it’s easy to find, kids go free and an adult ticket gives you an annual pass.  It’s well worth a visit but does get busy, so go early.

Somewhere I’ve got in mind for a visit this year is the London RAF Museum at Hendon, as recommended by Fariba at Mixed Race Family.

Northamptonshire

The Silverstone Experience opened in 2020 and it shares the history of the Silverstone circuit from medieval times when there was a Priory, through WW2 when RAF Silverstone operated Wellington Bombers from the site, through the last seventy-odd years where racing on two and four wheels have been the order of the day.

Oxfordshire

If boats are your thing then the River and Rowing Museum in Henley is well worth a visit.  Your ticket is an annual pass, so great value for money and it’s somewhere we’ve enjoyed visiting before.

Oxford Bus Museum is somewhere we took my OH for Father’s Day in 2012, pre-blog in fact. It’s somewhere we should revisit as my son doesn’t remember our visit.  Bubba Blue and Me shares her thought’s on her visit.

Somerset

I’d not heard of the Haynes International Motor Museum until recently, and having read Jenny at The Gingerbread House post, I’ve put it firmly on our to-visit list.

Surrey

Somewhere that we can thoroughly recommend visiting is Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.  It’s full of history and somewhere any aviation and motor vehicle fan will enjoy visiting. We even got to go aboard Concorde on our visit.

Tyne and Wear

If you’re close to Sunderland then Helena at Baby Foote recommends the North East Land, Sea and Air Museum.

Warwickshire

We’re lucky to have the British Motor Museum (formerly known as the Heritage Motor Centre) fairly close to home and it’s somewhere we’ve visited numerous times over the years.  It’s just off junction 12 of the M40, on the outskirts of Gaydon in Warwickshire.

Yorkshire

Somewhere we loved visiting a few years ago was the National Railway Museum in York.  It’s an amazing place to visit and a must for any train fans, and it’s free! Looking back through my old posts I can’t believe that I haven’t written a post up on this place, something I need to rectify, but in the meantime, Jo at A Rose Tinted World has come to my rescue with her post.

Naomi from Trips with A Tot recommends a visit to the South Yorkshire Transport Museum in Rotherham.

Where else would you recommend adding to this list of top Transport Museums across the UK?
