When you have a reluctant reader you have to look at different ways to get your child to read without them really thinking about it. Activity books can be great for this and I liked the sound of Solve it with Sherlock Holmes which was recently published through Carlton Books.
Solve it with Sherlock Holmes is written by Gareth Moore and is a 64-page hardback book aimed at children aged 8 years and over.
The book is produced in association with the Sherlock Holmes Museum and I’m hoping it might just inspire my son to read a few of the detective stories in years to come. In fact, my brother was just as reluctant to read as my son is, but it was the stories of Conan Doyle that finally got him reading books.
Solve it with Sherlock Holmes takes children on an adventure as they step into Victorian London and have to work on their problem-solving skills as they tackle the thirty-eight Sherlock Holmes themed logic and number puzzles throughout the book.
There are different cases to be solved and Holmes and Dr Watson need help to crack the clues. Through a range of puzzles and riddles, children work on their observation skills to become super sleuths.
The puzzles have been great for my nine-year-old son to work through as he’s been reading without really thinking about it and having fun at the same time. There’s a really good mix of puzzles to be solved and they’ve kept his attention well. It’s also been ideal that the puzzles aren’t linked, so he can complete as many as he likes, walk away and come back another day to solve some more cases.
My son doesn’t have electronic devices in the car when we’re going out on an adventure so the Solve it with Sherlock Holmes puzzle book has been a great activity for him to complete when we’ve been out and about and I can see it working well if you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained on flights and long car journeys this summer.
