Visiting King Arthur's Tower

Visiting King Arthur’s Tower

You may recall when we visited Stourhead for the first time recently that I mentioned visiting King Arthur’s Tower.  You can actually walk to the tower from the parkland at Stourhead, past St Peter’s Pump, but we didn’t realise that at the time. I already knew that we wouldn’t be able to climb up the tower on this particular visit but we were interested to see what it was like anyway.

From early March to mid-October you can spend time at the weekend visiting King Arthur’s Tower and be able to climb to the top of this National Trust property. We’d spotted signs for the tower as we’d got close to Stourhead in Wiltshire, so when we’d finished our visit there, we got back in the car and followed the signs. It’s not far from the main grounds and there is a large free car park within easy walking distance.

As we turned the corner past the information point we wondered how on earth we hadn’t seen the tower from the grounds of Stourhead.  It’s massive, at 49 metres high!

We didn’t realise until we got right up to King Arthurs Tower that it is actually triangular in shape. When the tower is open it’s possible to climb 205 steps to reach a viewing platform.

Apparently the centre of the tower is actually hollow.  We could only imagine how wonderful the views must be over the Wiltshire countryside as we stared up at the tower.

Visiting King Arthur’s Tower we did see the monarch himself looking out on his kingdom.

As we headed back to the car there was just time for a little stick fun, this is my son after all.

We will definitely return later in the year when the tower is open to make the most of the views from the top.  Have you been?

  1. Wow, your boy is getting so tall and grown up! I’ve never heard of this tower, nor any kind of triangular tower – how fascinating. I’m looking forward to seeing photos from the top if you go again, or by hollow do you mean not even any steps?! A great one for list next time we’re down your way #CountryKids

  2. Reading this post reminds me of a creepy book I read last year about an old tower. I hope you make it back to share the view from the top #CountryKids

  3. King Arthur’s Tower sounds interesting – I don’t think I’ve seen a triangular tower like this before. I imagine the views from the top will be amazing, especially on a clear day. Love how your son’s love for sticks is still going strong. Thanks for sharing with #CountryKids
