As you all know, I’m always on the lookout for fun and engaging games which also educate my son without him even realising it.  We both enjoy looking at maps of different countries and I thought that the Discover the World game from Fiesta Crafts Ltd would be right up our street.

Discover the World game

The Discover the World game is aimed at players aged 7 years and over and it can be played with 2-4 players.  The game comes with a fold-out playing board, 2 dice, 6 coloured counter playing pieces, 50 destination cards, 20 arrival cards, 16 journey cards, a sheet of arrow stickers and instructions.  The board itself is quite large (84x52cms) and it’s slightly bigger than our kitchen table.  We’ve been ok playing with just the two of us, but I think if we had more players we’d have to play the game on the carpet.  Maybe we’ve just got a small table.

Before you begin playing the game for the first time make sure that you stick arrows to the bottom of each counter playing piece.  This way it’s easy to remember which country a player is heading towards as you make your way around the world.

The aim of the game is to be the first player to collect 10 destination cards either by landing on them successfully or collecting from other players. If you have more than 4 players or want a shorter game then you could opt to collect 6 destination cards instead.

To start the game you place the destination, journey and arrivals cards face down on the relevant spaces on the board.  Each player then selects their playing piece and places them on the country they would like to start from.  The player who rolls the largest number goes first and play goes in a clockwise direction. Each player then takes a destination card to see where they are heading to on their first adventure.

The destination cards give you lots of facts and figures regarding the country you are heading towards as well as telling you which continent they can be found on.

The first player rolls the die and the number on the die shows them how many countries they can move through as they head for their destination.

The player can move across any country connected to the country they are currently placed on, and along dotted lines crossing seas.

If the player doesn’t reach their destination on their go play passes onto the next player.  When a player does reach their destination they pick up an arrival card to see if they can keep their destination card or not.  This is where the colour die comes into play.  My son wasn’t too happy when he lost his destination card on this challenge.  But it’s a good way to learn new facts and it does him no harm to learn that he can’t always win.

Whichever player wins the challenge gets to keep the destination card, and a new destination is selected.

If a player rolls a 6 then they don’t move, but do pick up a journey card.  That decides their fate.

We’ve had lots of fun playing the Discover the World game.  It makes you think about where countries are in the world and how you can get from one place to another in the least amount of moves.  Anything that helps my son with his geography is a winner as far as I’m concerned.

When we arrived at each destination we have told each other about all the facts on the card, looked at the flag of each country and talked about what else, if anything, we know about them.  The Discover the World game has certainly been keeping us entertained after school.

I’d certainly recommend the Discover the World game if you’re looking for ideas for birthday or Christmas presents. I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below (I do earn from qualifying purchases) for your reference.
