Beaver Investiture

Beavers Investiture

Monday was Monkey’s forth session with Beavers.  It’s been an interesting experience so far.  We have lots of protestations about not wanting to go, but when I pick him up he’s full of all the fun he’s had.  He asked to go and watch his Colony in the St Georges Day parade and has been very keen to have his own Beavers jumper.  So we’ve had a far few mixed signals.  Monday was to be his Beavers Investiture, and having missed last week due to a bank holiday, I was a little anxious as to how things would turn out.

Monkey’s Beavers jumper had arrived last week, so I knew he was excited to wear it for the first time.  But we’d had a really busy weekend away, he was tired, and he certainly wasn’t too keen on going back out after tea for his Beavers Investiture.  But once he knew that Daddy P was coming to watch, his mood improved.  I’d sent an email asking when we needed to be at the hall to watch the proceedings, only to get a reply back saying it was being postponed.

Joy. Having just got Monkey to a ‘happy place’, I then had to explain that he could still wear his new jumper but it would be another week until his joining ceremony.  He wasn’t best pleased, but he did go along to the session with me, and joined the others when called to attention.

With 20 minutes to go until pick up time, I received a text from the leader, he’d made it to the session after all and it was a green light for the Beaver Investiture. Cue mad rush trying to get Daddy P organised and we ran to the hall in the rain.

Monkey was beaming before the ceremony had even begun.  There were four boys going through the Beaver Investiture on Monday, and four proud sets of parents watching them. Promises were mumbled, salutes need some practice, but they all received their Necker, Woggle, badges and certificates.

So now Monkey has official joined the Grey Lodge within his Colony and I think the photo above shows just how pleased he was about it.  He was full of it all, as the three of us walked home in the rain.  He waved at one of the other newbies as he and his Mum drove past us.  My shy little boy, who hates doing anything in front of people, took part in his Beaver Investiture and is already talking about what’s he’s doing there next week.

The first thing he checked Tuesday morning was how I’d got on with sewing his badges on to his jumper the night before.  Can I wear my Necker to school Mummy?  No Monkey, that’s to only wear with your Beavers jumper.  It’s part of a different uniform.

I have so many hopes for Monkey and his journey ahead with Beavers.  I think it will be such a great thing for him to be involved with and will help him so much with his confidence.  My son is taking so many steps forward lately.  There is a new confidence and a little more willingness to try new things.  He’s exploring more and I can see my hand being held less.  He’s growing into himself, and it’s wonderful to watch. Time will tell if this is the start of a long Scouting journey, but I think we’ve made a good start and I’ll remember his beaming smile from Monday, for a long time to come.

  1. This is lovely! I’m glad the investiture went ahead and he’s obviously very proud of being a Beaver. I hope he has a long future in Scouting. I really can’t sing the praises of Scouting enough – it is an amazing thing.
Thanks for linking with Loud ‘n’ Proud.

  2. He looks so pleased with himself, I’m so glad he is enjoying it. I’m sure Beavers will help Monkey so much. I did think about looking into a group like this for Ethan but I don’t think he will understand it, thankfully he now has a place at the after school club.

Thanks for linking up with Small Steps Amazing Achievements :0)
