I’ve always been a firm believer in the saying that there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. A few weeks ago my son and I got to spend a Sunday alone together, the weather was fairly atrocious but that wasn’t going to hold us back. I asked my son what he wanted to do and straight away he told me that he wanted to go to his happy place. So we donned our boots and waterproofs and headed out for some fun in the rain and conker hunting at Stowe.
The rain was pouring down as we arrived, but that wasn’t going to deter my son at all. He knows the grounds like the back of his hand and wasn’t going to let a bit of rain get in the way of another adventure. It was definitely not the right weather for my DSLR so I had to rely on my phone instead to capture moments from our visit. The photos really don’t show you just how foul the weather was at times!
My son decided on the route and we headed off despite the weather. We passed a number of horse chestnut trees and vowed to collect some conkers on our way back to the entrance.
As it was a Heritage Open Day the Gothic Temple was open and we were both thrilled to have the opportunity to look around.
In all the years we’ve been visiting Stowe, we’ve never seen inside before. You can rent the two-bedroom property, and it must be wonderful to enjoy the views once all the visitors have gone home for the day.
Even in the pouring rain, this little chap was smiling. On days when he’s being challenging, I need to remind myself of the day like this one and how much more important these moments are.
He was rather happy to find a gazebo with a few deck chairs inside so he could chill out for a few minutes.
But it wasn’t long before he was off exploring in the rain again, and reacquainting himself with some of his favourite spots.
The rain finally calmed down enough for us to pull our hoods down long enough for us to take a few selfies, before continuing on our walk.
Having fun in the rain and conker hunting at Stowe, saw my son get quite a haul of conkers. This is only a small number of the ones he found.
Good job I had my handbag with me to stash them for him. They’ve now been decanted into a glass jar and sit in our kitchen. He’s very proud of them and I’m proud of him for wanting to get outdoors whatever the weather. We had a wonderful couple of hours enjoying each other’s company, in a place that always makes us smile.
Have you been out in all weathers lately?

Over 40 and a Mum to One
A Mum with a 13 year old son, enjoying life and having fun as my son travels through school life. We love to get outdoors whenever possible and make the most of the world around us. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
It looks like you had a wonderful time despite the rain! I am starting to think I need to invest in some waterproofs. It looks like you had the whole place to yourself. x
Years of being at Silverstone have meant that waterproofs are a sound investment!
I’m with you on getting outside in all weathers too – thank goodness for waterproofs! How interesting to be able to explore the Gothic Temple on this visit to Stowe. That’s a great haul of conkers too – we’ve not found any this year so far. Thanks for sharing your day out with #CountryKids
It was so beautiful inside
