I’ve been completing the Hartley’s Back To School Lunchtime Challenge with my 7 year old son, as we’ve talked about his school week, family, food and education. Now he’s back at school we only get to share lunchtimes at the weekends but when we are together, it’s a great time to sit down and chat about what he’s been up to. Having a jelly to hand also helps to get him chatting away!
I’ve found that he’s so much more talkative about his school days since starting Year Three. It’s lovely to have more of an idea of what he’s been up to on a day-to-day basis.
He’s off on a school trip this week and we were talking about what he’d be seeing when he was there. Well Mummy, we all get to pretend to be Henry VIII and get to chop Anne Boleyn’s head off! Really, are you sure? Oh yes Mummy, Miss W told us all about it. I’m looking forward to getting dressed up. Well as regular readers will know, my son isn’t a great one for dressing up at school, so that was a revelation in itself. I’m wondering how poor Anne will be dealt the deadly blow and how she’ll cope with all of Year Three being her executioner. But at least he’s looking forward to the trip, and hopefully he’ll get to learn and see, much more than just this moment from Tudor history.
I’ve learned about who he sits next to both in the class room and at lunchtime and apparently the puddings are much nicer this year than last year. He’s even been persuaded to eat some sweetcorn, with one of the Year Four girls telling him he wouldn’t taste it on his pizza. Was she right? Yes Mummy, but I still don’t want you to give me sweetcorn for my dinner. Oh well, I live in hope!
I recently showed my son where his Gramps grew up and was really impressed by how interested he was in my little family history tour. He lapped up all the information and was so excited to see that Gramps grew up right by a railway bridge. Apparently that makes Gramps even cooler. We’d been shown around the miniature railway in the area and my son told me how he’d told his school friends all about it. Mummy I told them that we were special people, no one else gets to have a private tour. That makes us important doesn’t it? Uum, I think lucky is more like it to be honest.
