So this week’s topic for The Theme Game is Play. Gosh, there are so many things I could write about, relating to play! Where to begin, what to focus on? Monkey and I play all the time. Then I had a different idea, I was inspired by a recent post by Laura at Yummy Mummy Flabby Tummy about her Gran. I’ve decided to write about play time with my Papa.
Please excuse the quality of this photo, it’s old and this is a photograph of it, taken on my phone. But I love this photo, it sums up summers full of play with my Papa when I was a little girl. I’m guessing that I was 5 or 6 at the time – so 1973-4. I can hear my Papa laughing now.
Papa and my Granny lived by the sea on the Kent coast, I used to go and stay with them when I was little. I loved it, I got to be centre of attention and was spoilt rotten. My Papa was a retired Vicar, he could be rather serious but he was wonderful with me.
I loved imaginary play with Papa. I don’t remember them having any toys there, so it was probably the only form of play available! Papa had a garden shed that had a split door like a stable. I have no idea why it was like that, but I loved that shed. We would play horses, I would herd Papa into his stable, shut the bottom door on him to keep him safe. Then I would proceed to ‘feed’ him. If he was very lucky I would let him out to take him for a ride.
Bless him, he would let me do this, over and over again. He was over 70 in this photo, but he’d play at being a horse for as long as I wanted, until Granny would call us in for lunch.
Happy memories of a wonderful man, my cherished Papa, my stallion of play time!

Over 40 and a Mum to One
A Mum with a 13 year old son, enjoying life and having fun as my son travels through school life. We love to get outdoors whenever possible and make the most of the world around us. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
A lovely post, with a trip down memory lane, and joy-filled photo. I do like the sound of that shed – I can imagine the hours of fun had there! Thanks for joining in with #TheThemeGame x
Thank you, my Uncle owns the house now and I was so upset when he replaced the shed a few years ago – it held so many memories of my childhood
Such lovely memories. It’s so nice to have these memories of your Grandparents. Mine were a huge part of my growing up and I look back fondly too.
It is isn’t it, I want my Uncle to sort out his cinefilm of us with them as children. That would be so special.
How lovely, I do enjoy reading about people’s memories like this. Thank you for sharing with #TheThemeGame
Thank you, it’s lovely to write about memories.
That’s a fab photo, you look like you’re having a great time! Such wonderful memories to have.
It just brings it all flooding back, seeing you on that dog the other day, just took me back to all those times.
That is so sweet and great to have a photograph to help bring back those lovely memories!
It’s very precious as I only have two photos of us together other than when he Christened me.
Aw what beautiful memories! Horsey horsey don’t you stop…;)
Hee hee – yes exactly!
This is such a lovely post and lovely memories. We lived quite far from my grandparents growing up (one Grandma lived in oz and I only met her once) so I don’t have so many memories of playing with them. Thankfully though all of my Monkey’s grandparents are local and I hope he will be able to have this kind of memory to look back on! xx
I only had one set that and they were a long way from us, way before the M25 was built, it would take hours to get there. But even so, we were very close. I feel for my Monkey as he only has my parents and they live in Spain. We Skype every week, but I’d love for him to have them on his doorstep like some of his buddies do.
This is lovely! I love the photo, it may be old but you can see your total love for him in it!
Oh thank you, it is very special to me.
what a great photo and lovely memories
