Week 26 of PODcast‘s linky The Alphabet Photography Project and we are at the end again. What to pick for Z this year as I picked Zebra last year! I’ve decided to go for The Alphabet Photography Project Z is for Zoom, having spent the weekend at the Grand Prix with my brother.
Over the last few years I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with not being able to zoom in on the cars as they race around the track. In actual fact the shutter speeds on my cameras have barely released before the cars have sped away. It got to the stage where I just gave up and relied on my brother to take all the shots with his super-duper DSLR and long lens.
I bought my Canon 70D DSLR earlier this year, and it was going to be my first chance to put it to the test in Sports mode. Now I’ve only got the standard 18-55mm lens, so I really wasn’t expecting much if I’m totally honest. To get the occasional car in the frame would be fab, but I knew I couldn’t get the detail my brother can with his 300mm lens.
I was really pleased with the results. I actually have recognisable cars in shot and in focus. Of course I still can’t zoom in as much as my brother – but that involves saving up some more pennies – maybe next year it will be me getting this shot too. My brother got the minute details, I got the overall story. It’s a start and I’m happy with that. Even happier that my Ferrari’s didn’t lock up once 🙂

Over 40 and a Mum to One
A Mum with a 13 year old son, enjoying life and having fun as my son travels through school life. We love to get outdoors whenever possible and make the most of the world around us. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
I always find motion difficult to successfully capture everytime, but there is no doubt in your top photo that the car is zooming. Glad you caught it. 🙂 #Alphabetphoto
Thank you
This is such a perfect Z for you! Great photos!
Thank you
Perfect photos for ‘Z’ and two amazing captures. Glad you enjoyed the Grand Prix and getting to experiment with your camera 🙂
Thanks x
Your shot is brilliant! What a great choice for Z 🙂
Thankyou
I’ve never fancied watching it on TV but the atmosphere live must be fantastic. And those are fantastic photos 🙂
It certainly makes it being part of a huge crowd
I bet it was brilliant & you’ve certainly got enough detail and sense of motion to be proud of 🙂 I’m not great combining fast moving things with my zoom lens so I mostly use it for wildlife shots! A fab Z 🙂
Is your brother on Flickr by the way, would love to look at his other F1 photos?
Brilliant! I’m so jealous you got to go to the GP too! I’ve not been for ages! #IOTW
I’ve photographed a few motor sports before, but sadly not F1 yet (touring cars and beach cross), and it can be a tricky subject for sure 🙂
I think your photo is just as good as your brother’s, just in a different way! The sport mode on my camera hasn’t been as good recently, which is disappointing for someone who spends half her life watching her kids do sport! I really need to invest in a new lens, but they’re so expensive!
That is fabulous! Well caught and a perfect action shot. Thank you so much for linking to #iotw
Thank you
