Abbey Pumping Station Museum

Abbey Pumping Station Museum #CountryKids

Back in the summer Monkey and I were staying in Leicester.  We’d visited the National Space Centre first thing, but Monkey got really spooked with dark downstairs display area.  It soon became clear we wouldn’t be spending as much time at the museum as I’d hoped. After we’d paid our parking, I’d noticed there was a museum right next door to the Space Centre as we went in, so thought this was worth investigating further before we headed home.  Bonus when I found out the Abbey Pumping Station Museum is actually free to enter on most days (check the website for special event pricing).  The museum is closed during the winter months, except for event days, but from February-October it’s open daily.

I had no idea what to expect, but it seemed silly not to explore.  We could spot some outside exhibits which Monkey was interested in and it gave him chance to chill a little too.

Imagine Monkey’s delight when the first thing he spotted was a real life Steam Shovel. He loves Marion the Steam Shovel from Thomas & Friends so he was thrilled to see a real one.

There were a number of interesting exhibits in the grounds along with information points.

The pumping station building itself is really quite beautiful, typically Victorian with all the detailing.

Once inside there are a number of interactive displays, a train table and an eclectic mix of collections to explore.  There’s even an exhibit showcasing what happens when you flush the toilet with a ‘wooden poo’ that kids can put in a toilet.  Yep, that was a BIG hit with Monkey and another boy, who took turns in dropping and chasing duties.

The Beam Engines are still in situ inside the Abbey Pumping Station Museum, and although not working, they are still impressive to see.

I’m really glad that we stumbled upon Abbey Pumping Station Museum, Monkey really enjoyed our visit and I’m sure if we’re in the area we’ll pop in again.  It’s worth noting that the museum shares a Pay and Display car park with the National Space Centre.  The charge is £3 and you need the correct change.

  1. Now this is right up my street, it looks fascinating both inside and out and well worth the visit. the Wooden poo made me chuckle, what child wouldn’t be taken with that one! A great way to uncover a little history and enjoy some family time. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

  2. I’d no idea this was even next door to the space centre and we’ve been to visit there a few times now! Looks worth a visit the next time we’re that way 🙂

  3. Definitely looks like an interesting place. I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea, but there’d definitely be enough to keep n interested, especially with the loo part!

  4. Isn’t it great when you stumble upon somewhere! Sounds like this was a great place to visit and I’m glad you managed to turn your outing around. Looks like a really interesting museum with some quirky exhibits! #countrykids
