Beach time at Praia dos Três Castelos

Beach time at Praia dos Três Castelos

Along the Algarve you are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches> If we’d been staying in the region for longer, we would have explored more.  But our recent trip was all about relaxing with family, without too much driving around.  My parents know the area and were in charge of suggesting a family friendly beach with easy access (for Mum) and facilities for all.  During our week in Portugal we spent two days enjoying beach time at Praia dos Três Castelos.

At the beginning of June we found the region relatively quiet, but we still headed out early from Silves to make the most of our time on the beach.  We headed to the west of Praia da Rocha to the Praia dos Três Castelos beach, (away from Portimão) to a free cliff top car park that my parents had discovered on a previous trip.  There aren’t many spaces so it’s worth getting there early.  There is a another pay and display car park close by too.  Once parked, we walked along the cliff top walk, enjoying the view as we passed.

Then picked one of a number of routes down the cliff face via concrete steps.  My Mum struggles with this sort of thing, but the steps we found were wide, and provided railings to help too.  From the bottom of the steps there was a wooden boardwalk taking you past a lifeguard station to a beach front cafe and toilets.  We found sun loungers and canopies available for hire at €5 per lounger/per day.  This may of course rise over the key summer months!

We like things quieter, but if you want the hustle and bustle of a big beach then it’s a few minutes walk to the main Praia da Rocha with its watersports etc.

For us it was a case of just enjoying the golden sand, wonderful rock formations and a beach that goes on forever.

Monkey’s priority was to get straight down to sand castle building.  Granny had bought his bucket and spades over from Spain, so he was well equipped to get digging.

The sea goes out some way at low tide making it perfect for sand castle building, beach combing and just general relaxing.  The sand is fine and pleasant to walk on, and in fact I just loved it.

We found the rocks and cliffs rather stunning and spent ages strolling along the long stretches of inter-joining beaches over our two visits. There were layers of shells throughout the rocks which fascinated us.  Monkey and Gramps also found crabs hiding amongst them on one of their walks together.

It was so lovely to see Monkey enjoying his beach time at Praia dos Três Castelos, just having fun. Building sand castles.

Splashing about in the water, spending valuable time with his grandparents.

Our beach time at Praia dos Três Castelos was the highlight of the holiday for Monkey, joy was written all over his face.  He had room to just be, room to have fun, room to explore and create adventures.  He was truly in his element.

We all fell in love with the beach and I hope we have the opportunity to return to Portugal and explore the many other beaches along the Algarve.

The beach cafe was great for drinks, ice creams and lunch time nibbles – omelettes, sandwiches and sardines all went down well with us.  All were reasonably priced, the service was good and the staff were friendly and great with children.

Have you been to the beaches of the Algarve?  I’d love some tips of where we should visit next.

If you like the look of Praia dos Três Castelos why not pin it for later?

  1. Beautiful beaches and clear blue skies, this is what makes going away so appealing. Sometimes we have the same here but it is never guaranteed. You can see the fun and excitement on Monkey’s face here. what a wonderful relaxing holiday and the beaches look quite quiet still too. I bet you wish you were back there now, it has been so cold in England this month. I really hope we have a heat wave on the way!

Thank you for sharing what I knew would be a lovely post on #CountryKids

  2. What a fabulous beach. I love the rocky formations. It looks like Monkey had an amazing time. My lot have been waiting to get on the beach but the weather has been awful.
