We have failed miserably to get outdoors this month at the weekend, primarily because we’ve been catching up with family and friends, but I’m longing to see my son running around outside! So today I’m taking a look back at a few hours we spent deer spotting at Charlecote Park with friends last month.
We’ve visited the National Trust property in Warwickshire lots of times since my son was small, and it’s a firm favourite at all times of year. We were visiting just before Christmas and the kids activities seems to have finished, but we weren’t bothered. We’d decided we’d visit the house after lunch, and make the most if it being dry first.
It was perfect to spend a bit of time running around and Monkey and N were soon running on ahead of Emma and I as we chatted away.
There are a few different routes you can take around the grounds at Charlecote Park, and over the years we’ve pretty much covered all of them. A big draw is always seeing the fallow deer. They are so used to visitors and are therefore perfect for children to enjoy looking at. They are often to be found standing out in the open, so it’s really easy for children to spot them.
But first there was the lake to investigate. I thought Monkey would have N running around the entire length of it as he normally does, but not today. He was happy to just see it and move on.
Deer spotting at Charlecote Park saw the boys getting closer and closer, whilst the deer just stared back at them in amusement.
Monkey was certainly feeling braver and more inquisitive than on previous visits, and got a little closer than I’d have liked. But he just liked to walk along beside them.
It does make a change to be able to spot deer easily, rather than see fleeting glimpses of them as they run through the trees. They are such beautiful animals.
After the deers had been thoroughly investigated it was time for some more running around.
We walked to the side of the house, had a quick stop on the bridge before walking round by the river and back again in a loop as the boys let off steam before lunch.
Of course when Monkey’s around, there’s always a stick involved in the adventure at some point.
Before we knew it our deer spotting at Charlecote Park was over for another day, and it was time to say goodbye.
Have you been deer spotting recently?

I haven’t even left the house that much over the last few weeks. It’s been to cold and horribly wet where we live. But I do want to go on more family walks this year and this place looks amazing. The kids would love seeing the deers.
It’s a lovely place to explore
I couldn’t believe how close to the deer Monkey was willing to go. There was no way N was going that near! We’ve been pretty rubbish recently at getting out too. The weather’s been awful, I’ve been ill and N has just wanted to stay home. I was hoping to get out this weekend to do some photography (especially as my course is now all outdoors flowers and I can’t get out during the week), but the weather looks awful.
We did quite well at Stowe today, avoided the rain until we were heading back to the cafe.
It’s great to see Monkey and N running around exploring Charlecote Park together, they look so happy off in their own little world. I’m impressed by how close the deer were willing to let you get, most of ours on the farm get scared away much quicker. The weather really hasn’t been the best for getting outside, hopefully you’ll be able to get back out again soon!
Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.
They are so tame there.
We drive past Charlecote every time we visit my parents but have yet to visit. Looks a great way to get up close and personal with Deer. Great post #CountryKids
I can thoroughly recommend a visit
I havent seen a deer this close! I can only imagine how magical it is to be near them. They are such magical creatures! #countrykids
They really are beautiful to look at close to.
What an amazing spot and how wonderful to get up close to those gorgeous animals
They are beautiful
Its the one thing I miss since moving away from Surrey. i loved the deer there. Fabulous photos x
I think these are the closest we have in a park, but there are monk jacks in the countryside around here
It looks great to be able to get so close to the deer! I feel I need to find a good deer spotting place near us… and preferably as beautiful as this one!

It’s a lovely place to see them close up
Beautiful! This reminded me of my visit to Phoenix Park, Dublin where you can see herds of Fallow deer.
It’s a great way for children to see these beautiful animals isn’t it
