Last week I shared some memories from our trip to Walmer Castle in Kent with you, and this week I continue with a tale of two castles in Kent – Deal Castle. The castle is a stones throw north of Walmer Castle on the Kent coast, and a visit to both castles can easily be managed within the same day. Deal Castle is again, managed by English Heritage and is a small artillery castle built right on the sea during the time of Henry VIII, which can be found on the outskirts of Deal itself.
There is a car park within a minutes walk of the entrance to the castle and Monkey had caught sight of the cannons as we approached. They were sure to be our first stop!
Deal Castle is a fortress castle, like Walmer Castle and is therefore quite low-lying. We were all surprised to find it so close to the modern-day town, but the views out to sea where rather wonderful.
Monkey was rather keen to try firing one of the cannons when he spotted some cannon balls. He was somewhat disappointed when he couldn’t move them.
So he resorted to a game of hide and seek with Daddy P instead.
We decided to explore the various underground corridors and even Monkey managed the spiral staircase at Deal Castle – it’s really rather child friendly, for those less adventurous explorers.
Deal Castle is very compact, and once we’d finished exploring we decided to have a quick walk along the promenade before our long drive back to Oxfordshire.
Deal is a typical coastal Kent fishing town, we’d missed the hubbub of the fisherman selling their wares as it was later in the day. But we could still imagine the scene.
Monkey thought he’s eaten enough spinach to raise an anchor or two, but maybe he’d best leave that to Popeye!
We would have popped into the Time Ball Tower Museum, but sadly it was shut – reason to return another time.
The beach was too inviting not to be explored.
We had a lovely weekend away in Kent, exploring the county of my birth. I got my castle fix, with Dover castle, Walmer and Deal and introduced Monkey to lots of history too. We need to return so I can show him Leeds Castle, another one of my favourites!

Looks like you had some wonderful weather for your trip away, it made me smile seeing Monkey head straight for the cannons, he is such a boy, mine would have done exactly the same! We visited Deal during a trip last September and saw the castle as we walked past. Definitely will visit it when we go back later this year.

I love looking around castles and am a bit jealous of your weekend doing this in Kent. I’m also a Maid of Kent/Kentish Maid – I can never remember which! Deal looks a lot easier to get around than the last castle we visited in Dartmouth. Lovely post #countrykids
