I love introducing my son to new creative outlets, and especially so to ones that can be used as easily on the move as they can be at home. The Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic takes the concept of peg board art to a whole new level with the introduction of light.
The Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic is aimed at children aged four years and over. It comes with the pegboard light box with fold-out stand, six templates, two hundred round pegs in white, yellow, blue, pink, orange and green, as well as an instruction leaflet. You will need three AA batteries to operate the light box.
There are a few different ways you can use the Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic to create your artwork. You can either place the templates provided on top of the board and push the various colour pegs through the colour-coded letters, have the template by the side of you and place the pegs free-hand or create your own design.
I wasn’t sure whether my son, being nearly eleven, would prefer to just freestyle with this set, but he was keen to try out the templates first and actually enjoyed pushing the pegs through the template to create his first masterpiece.
He was very intrigued to see how the light would work with each design, but I wasn’t allowed to watch until he’d finished. The Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic provides the perfect way for him to forget about school at the end of the day, and just unwind. It was lovely to see him so absorbed and having fun.
The pegs are easy to push through the paper and you need to concentrate to make sure you select the correct colours as you complete the artwork.
But of course, with my son, it wasn’t long before he put the templates aside and started on his own creation – a warship!
There is a button to press on the back of the lightbox which starts the light show, press the button to change the light show; from blinking, pulsing, steady and random to bring your artwork to life.
We’ve only used the Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic at home at the moment, but once we are able to take car trips again to enjoy new adventures, this is the kind of thing my son could easily have in the back of the car with him to keep him entertained.
