Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes - Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse

Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes – Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse

As a child I loved learning about the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians.  My 7 year old son is starting to be inspired by their stories too and has become a big fan of Horrible Histories recently.  When I came across the newly published Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes – Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse thanks to Boolino.

Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes - Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse

Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes – Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse is written by Stella Tarakson and was published through Sweet Cherry Publishing last month.  It’s the first in a series of books with a historical twist, aimed at children aged 7-11 years of age.

We meet young Tim Baker, who has to help out with jobs around the house since his Dad died.  With his Mum trying to hold down two jobs, Tim is doing the housework to help out.  Unfortunately he breaks an antique Greek vase, the only thing his mother owns of any value.  But the vase has been holding a secret for a very long time.  Hercules has been trapped inside the vase since the days that Zeus was revered by the Ancient Greeks.  His wife Hera placed a curse on Hercules and he had been trapped inside the vase ever since.

So begins an unlikely friendship between a boy and a hero from ancient times. Tim soon learns that only he can see the demigod and that although Hercules might be very strong, he isn’t the smartest of Ancient Greeks.  This gets Tim in all sorts of scraps as Hercules tries to help him, but just makes matters worse, with Tim always being blamed.

But Hercules does help Tim to stand up for himself at school, where he’s being bullied and being called names. We follow the hapless couple as Tim tries to persuade Hercules, that his help isn’t always the best for others.

There are plenty of illustrations throughout Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes – Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse and we’ve been enjoying reading this together at bedtime recently.

Monkey particularly liked it when Hercules mistook the Tiger rug in Tim’s living room for the Lion of Nemea, and tried to wrestle with it in the garden.  There are lots of humorous moments and snippets of Greek mythology runs throughout the story.

Gormless Gods and Hapless Heroes – Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse is a fun read we look forward to the next installment.
