With everything the world has experienced over the last fifteen months, it seemed the perfect time to introduce my eleven-year-old son to How to Vanquish a Virus by Dr Paul Ian Cross.  The one hundred and twenty-eight-page paperback book is published through Welbeck Publishing this month and is an information and fun read for children aged eight years and over.

How to Vanquish a Virus

How to Vanquish a Virus aims to inform children about vaccines and viruses, and to offer them an entertaining read based on scientific facts. I was quite amazed to discover that there are more viruses on our planet than there are stars in the universe.  Did you know that?

Children learn about viruses from how they come to exist from a single virion particle and to spread as well as what they are made of.  How to Vanquish a Virus also explains the differences between a virus and bacteria in a fun and engaging way with illustrations throughout.

I can’t imagine that there are any Primary school children who haven’t heard of Covid-19, even if they might not fully understand what it is.  But How to Vanquish a Virus gives them clear information and accurate facts.  There are Did you Know sections as well as information on how to be a digital detective and sniff out the truth from the fake news that is often spread across the internet.

The book also explains how the body is built, how DNA works and how our bodies are designed to defend us from bad bacteria which are known as pathogens, viruses, fungi and parasites.

There are activities to complete as well as quizzes to make children really think about what they’ve been reading in How to Vanquish a Virus.

  1. I love all things gothic/steampunk, so it would be black, with lace and steampunk goggles!

  2. I’d have my favourite singer’s face printed on it…Dimash’s gorgeous face would contantly remind me how pivotal his music was in keeping me sane during lockdown!

  3. tie dye cos i think it can create some funky effects or something to represent my fav tv show, friends

  4. I would just design a mask with the part of my face on it that is covered by the mask so as not to stand out.

  5. Hello, I would like my face mask to be dark blue with white polka dots on. I just love that combination!

  6. Would have to be something amusing to keep my children amused maybe one of my dads moustache

  7. I would have a picture of Minnie Mouse because she’s my favourite Disney character m
