When the world returns to normal we will be back off on our adventures, near and far.  But until then we are looking at other ways to enjoy travelling around the country.  I love games that are educational without my ten-year-old son really realising it, and the new I Love Britain game from Tactic Games is a perfect example of just that.

The I Love Britain game is aimed at players aged eight years and over and can be played with two-four players, with gameplay lasting for around twenty minutes.

The game comes with a game board, one hundred double-sided cards, die, four coloured playing pieces and an instruction leaflet.

The playing cards feature five different categories – old times, nature, culture, customs and traditions and amazing.  The aim of the I Love Britain game is to collect cards from all five categories as you travel around the country. Each playing card features one of the category symbols on the picture side of the card, as well as showing where in the country you need to visit to try to win it.

The die features symbols for different modes of transport – bicycle means you can move your playing piece across one border, or along a trail of water, a car means you can cross two, aeroplane means you can cross three and an X will be explained further down this post.

To start the game each player picks a playing piece and puts it on a space of their choosing.  Lay three cards next to the game board picture side up and place the rest in a pile.

We always start games with the youngest player going first, so my son had to look at the three cards available to see where he could go to, he then had to roll the die to see how he could start his journey.

Once you arrive at your first destination, you then ask for the question on the relevant card to be asked. If you answer correctly then you keep the card and place a new one in the selection zone. If you answer incorrectly, the correct answer isn’t revealed and then you place a new card on top of the one answered incorrectly. This card will come into play in future rounds.

If you roll the X then you choose any of the three cards and place it on the bottom of the pile, the top card then comes into play and the player goes again.

We’ve had lots of fun playing the I Love Britain game, the questions have been quite challenging at times, so we’ve both learned more about the countries which make up the Union.  The game is also quite portable as the game board folds up, so you can put everything away neatly in the box.
