If I Forget You

If I Forget You

I first discovered TC Greene when I read The Headmaster’s Wife back in 2014.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book and couldn’t wait to get started on If I Forget You when it arrived recently.

If I Forget YouIf I Forget You was published through Corvus Books on 1st September and tells the story of Margot Fuller and Henry Gold.  They’d been in love in 1991 but had lost each other, then in 2012 they come face to face for the first time in over 20 years.

The book moves between the two years and between the two characters as we learn about their lives in the 1990’s and what’s happened to them since.  I’m a sucker for a love story, so I was quickly drawn in to If I Forget You and the stories of Henry and Margot.

They meet at Bannister, a college in New York but come from totally different worlds. Henry’s Jewish and comes from a working class family, whilst Margot’s family are wealthy, well-connected and the two are just destined not to be together.

But the two want to defy the odds.  Margot wants to break free from the constraints of her class and family.  Henry just wants to be with her.  They are young and in love and he’s an aspiring poet trying to make his way in the world.

Their world comes crashing down around them over the summer vacation.  He’s been earning his way, working in a vineyard.  Margot is spending the summer as she always does, in the Hamptons.  She persuades her mother to let her go to be with Henry for a few days and what happens next will shape their lives for the next twenty years.

I don’t want to give you the entire plot, but they are pulled apart, and have to head in different directions, lead different lives and ignore the love they’ve shared.  Their lives are never what they should be, until a chance encounter makes them both fight for what they want and who they truly want to be.  There may be a few secrets thrown in for good measure too.

I didn’t become as emotionally attached to these characters as I have with other books, I enjoyed If I Forget You, but it didn’t grab me as much as others have. Priced at £9.99 I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link so you can try it for yourself.
