As regular readers know, my parents live in Spain and I’m always looking for new ideas to entertain and educate my 7-year-old son with a Spanish theme. When I was contacted by Flying Kids, I just knew we had to try out their Kids’ Travel Guide – Spain, activity book.
The 44 page A4 paperback activity book is full of fun things for kids to do, whilst also teaching them a little about Spain. Aimed at children aged 6-12 years of age my reluctant reader has needed help with some parts of the Kids’ Travel Guide – Spain as the pages are generally quite wordy. He’s 7 and a large amount of text in one place can give him ‘word blindness’ if you know what I mean! But with a little help, he’s really enjoyed looking through this book.
Children are guided through the Kids’ Travel Guide – Spain by Leonardo, a seasoned traveller. The book starts with a travel diary, so children can record where and why they are visiting Spain. There’s space for a family photo to be added, along with information on others travelling with the child.
It’s probably worth noting for a British audience that there are a few Americanised words – Mom, candy etc. The guide also suggests chewing gum as one of the ideas to help children with take off and landing on a plane. Maybe I’m just a fossil, but I wouldn’t dream of giving my 7-year-old chewing gum at any time, I’m not sure I’d want a 12-year-old having it either. But, like I say, maybe that’s just me.
We have loved the various challenges throughout the Kid’s Travel Guide – Spain. My son has been learning to use a compass with Beavers, so he really enjoyed putting his skills to the test.
The book is full of information and quizzes (the answers are shown on each page to check against). We learnt about the Euro and all about the coat of arms which features on the Spanish flag. This book has proved that you are never too old to learn something new! We’ve read about the history of Spain as well as brushing up on our language skills.
My parents live about an hour away from Seville, and it’s a city we all love. My son recognised the photos of the city as soon as we turned the page. You can also learn about Madrid and Barcelona.
At the back of the Kid’s Travel Guide – Spain you can find quizzes to test how well your child has taken in the information supplied within the book. There’s also a section to complete when your holiday has come to an end, so the book can become part of your holiday memories.
This guide is part of a series of guide books covering a number of US destinations, Thailand, France and Italy, there’s even a UK and London version which might go down well on a staycation.
