disclosure: we were sent the item mentioned in exchange for an honest review
We’ve been really struggling with conventional school at homework recently so when Trends UK asked us if we’d like to try out their Machine Works V8 Engine AR I thought it would be a great way to engage my son and tick off a few educational learning areas too.
The Machine Works V8 Engine AR set is aimed at children aged ten years and over and allows them to build a fully functioning motorised model of a petrol V8 engine. You will need 3 x AA batteries to power the set but other than that, everything you need is included.
There are 250 different components in the build, all are clearly labelled, and the sets comes with a comprehensive instruction manual, as well as details on how to use the engine with a free augmented reality app which is available to download on both Google Play and App Store.
The set is designed to be easy for children to piece together, and whilst not being an exact replica of a V8 engine, it gives children a great insight into how engines are produced and how they function.
The instructions are easy to follow and the magnetic screwdriver provided makes it simple for little hands to place and tighten screws correctly.
My ten year managed to construct most of this set by himself with me only needing to assist him with a couple of the more tricky to place screws.
Once the engine is completed, there is a button to press to start it up, the pistons start pumping and even the spark plugs light up, and the engine roars into life. There is no off button, but it doesn’t run constantly, however, there is no volume control.
The instruction leaflet also provides more information on the basic principles of how an engine works and explains what the different components do with the engine mechanism as well as looking at engine cooling and fuel injection systems.
The Machine Works V8 Engine AR is lightweight and the perfect size for children to really enjoy playing with.
I mentioned earlier that there is a free augmented reality app that you can use with this set which allows children to enjoy a different experience with the set. They can see an exploded view of the engine with five different animations of key components and detailed descriptions of eleven different engine parts plus the engine sound. They can also switch between normal, x-ray, and an exploded view of the Machine Works V8 Engine AR. You can take photographs of the different views, manipulate the 3D images, and adjust the sound of the engine. My son loves the x-ray view.
I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below for your reference (I do earn from qualifying purchases) and if you’re looking for something to entertain your children whilst providing an educational element then the Machine Works V8 Engine AR is definitely worth looking at in my opinion.
