Missing, Presumed

I’ve literally just finished Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner for the Mumsnet Book Club and wanted to share my thoughts with you. Published through Killer Reads in February this year, this thriller has you guessing right til the end.

Missing, Presumed is a great read, each chapter is told from a different characters point of view and the plot builds and builds.  It’s a good page turner of a read.

Will Carter returns home one December night to find his front door open, coats scattered everywhere, blood splatters and his girlfriend Edith Hind is nowhere to be found. Worryingly, her keys, coat, phone and car are exactly where they should be.   Where can she be?  What has happened to her?

Edith is a Cambridge post-graduate, the daughter of the imminent Doctor, with friends in high places.  This is not going to be an easy case for DS Manon Bradshaw and her team to solve.  The boyfriend becomes the prime subject as the story starts to build.  He’s a bit of a heart-throb, but dull as dishwater.  Could it be a crime of passion? Had Edith tired of him?

But that would all be a little too obvious, and as you turn the pages of Missing, Presumed, we meet other characters and begin to unravel their parts in the plot.  DS Manon Bradshaw is really the central character in the story, she’s fast approaching 40 and has been unlucky in love.  Internet dating has produced a series of disastrous dates and then she meets a man she believes might be the one.  The man in question discovers a body of a young man.  How will they both become part of the story? Bradshaw is a character who has a tough job, but she wants to be loved and wants to share that experience.

I never like to ruin the plot when reviewing a book.  You need to buy it yourself if you want to find out what happened.  What I can tell you is that you really have no idea what has happened to Edith until you reach the very end of the book.  There are surprises along the way, as well as a few tears.  It’s an interesting read, that I’ve enjoyed.
