Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues

Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues – sent for review and giveaway

My nine-year old son asked me last week if pirates still exist after we’d watched something on television and it sparked a whole conversation about pirates past and present.  So when a package arrived at the weekend from Carlton Books which contained the Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues book, it was a great way of continuing our discussion on the subject.

Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues

Due for publication on 7th February 2019, we’ve been lucky to get a preview of Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues which is aimed at children aged nine years and over.  The 64 page book is crammed full of information about pirates across the ages, and features a range of maps and illustrations too.

Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues

Written by Anne Rooney, the book tells stories about real life pirates and where their adventures took place.  Charting escapades from as early as AD790 and the Vikings through to the present days pirates that haunt the Indian Ocean and the coast of East Africa.

The book talks about the hunting grounds of the Corsairs, the name given to Muslim pirates in times gone by and gives us lots of information about some of the most dangerous corsairs, including the Barbarossa brothers. Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues also gives children information on how a pirate would be dressed and what weapons they would carry.  We learned that pirates actually captured slaves, putting some to work and selling others in slave markets.

We’re all well aware of the Pirates of the Caribbean films but this book delves into the reality of what was happening in the part of the world, which was seen as a land of plenty for pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard, at the time.

It’s been fascinating to learn that even pirates had a code of conduct, which in the Caribbean was known as the Articles of Agreement, which each pirate had to agree to before becoming part of the crew.  The book goes into the details of what might have been included in that agreement.

We’ve learned that not all pirates were men, there were two women who proved to be just as feisty as their male shipmates.

The book is full of information, from how ships were attacked through to the type of pirate ships used to capture the treasures that were chased down.

As well as looking at the Caribbean and Indian Ocean activities of pirates through the years, we’ve also learned about the China Sea, favourite pirate haunts and shipwreck locations.  Did you know that the most successful pirate of all time was a woman named Zheng Shi?

Pirates: True Stories of Seafaring Rogues is a really good, factual read and one that my son has thoroughly enjoyed.

You can find out more about this and other Carlton Books on their website, as well as pre-ordering a copy of this book too.

  1. My daughter told me she would be the Daring Duchess off the High Seas! Glamorous and dangerous love it!

  2. What would your pirate name be and why?
    Chris the Cross . . . . . my name’s Chris and l’m often cross

  3. I’m Captain NanaPat. A name given to me several years ago by one of my grandsons. He still loves to play pirates every time he visits.

  4. Fearless G. The name would make those who hear it scared and expecting a huge man mountain as G would stand for Giant. (Aka the total complete opposite of me.)

  5. Samurai Champ. Lad – I would sail the seas with my trusted Samurai sword, plunging to the depths of the sea all who came in my way….

  6. Captain Short fuse only because I’d want people to think I’ve got a bad temper and they should do what they say (Don’t think Captain cuddly would get me far in a pirate life!)

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
