I can remember as a child trying Origami, I think I saw it on Blue Peter or Take Hart with the wonderful Tony Hart (the Mr Maker of my generation!) and thought I’d have a go. It became a bit of a craze at the time. Needless to say I was rubbish at it. Well thirty plus years later I’ve been introduced to Popagami – a new take on origami and the art of paper-folding based around animal origami – called Pop-Ettes™.
The Pop-Ettes™ are a collection of innovative and fun origami animal characters that can be used for greeting cards, gift containers, finger puppets and many other uses!
I was intrigued, how easy would this actually be? I received a Combo pack which contains 24 large colour pop-ettes on gloss paper and an Animal Fun Activity Book – a great book that gives you full instructions (phew), 12 mini colour Pop-Ettes, and 3 templates so you can make your own designs!
So how would I fair with the Popagami – a new take on origami? Would I end up with an animal or a monster????
Well, I have to say that my first effort did take me about 10 minutes, with a lot of reading the instructions out loud – did that help? I don’t know, but I do like the sound of my own voice!
I’m now getting much quicker and can make the little creatures within 5 minutes. They are certainly too tricky for my son aged 3 and a half to do, but I would think a 5-year-old would be able to have a go with some adult guidance.
You can see the size difference above for the large and mini Pop-Ettes – how cute do they look? They are definitely a hit with him.
So what can you use these little paper creations for? Well, there are some great ideas shown within the Animal Fun Activity Book – use them as finger puppets (we’ve tried this and it went down with him as an audience), I personally like the idea of putting little treats inside them and I’m going to borrow that idea for his birthday party in December I think. You may also remember an earlier post I wrote about ideas for his bedroom which included some paper mobiles – well I can see an animal-themed one being added to his collection now.
Fancy trying some of these yourself? Well, if you are quick you still have a chance to win some on the Popagami Facebook page, and if you don’t have any luck with the competition you can currently get a 50% discount on the website using code SUMMER13.
We’ve had a lot of fun with the Popagami pack we received, and I’m sure his friends will like something a little different in their party bags at the end of the year.
