You may remember that we reviewed a fun Early Reader from Orion Books last year (eek – where does the time go!) following the adventures of Poppy the Pirate Dog.  Well, the lovable Dalmatian is back with her latest tale – Poppy the Pirate Dog and the Treasure Keeper.

Written by Liz Kessler and illustrated by Mike Phillips, this Red Early Reader books is aimed at children who are starting to read for themselves.  As you know Monkey loves this series, and will happily sit and listen as I read through the 74 page paperback book.

We catch up with Poppy and she’s preparing a pirate show with Tim and Suzy as a birthday surprise for their mother.  Poppy has the important job of being the treasure keeper.  Their preparations come unstuck when Mum and Dad want parts of the ‘pirate ship’ back.  Dad reminds the children about the impending birthday, and tells them he has bought a pretty, sparkly necklace for Mum’s birthday.

Poor Poppy was trying to find somewhere to hide the treasure for the show when she has an accident and hurts her eye.  After a trip to the vet she comes back with a plastic collar around her neck.  She doesn’t feel like a pirate dog any more.

Things go from bad to worse.  Dad has lost Mum’s birthday present, and the neighbours have lost their tortoise.  Can Poppy the Pirate Dog save the day with her Treasure Keeping skills?

Poppy the Pirate Dog and the Treasure Keeper is a lovely tale and Monkey really enjoyed listening to it.  Obviously we had to look for some pirate treasure of our own when we’d finished reading this story!

Published on 14th August, this Early Reader is priced at £4.99 and in my opinion you can’t go wrong with these books.
