RAF100 The Official Story – perfect for Father’s Day

you all know that we are planes, trains and automobile mad in this household and guess we aren’t alone. We often spend Father’s Day out and about enjoying something to do with vehicles.  Last year we spent the day at RAF Cosford which we all thoroughly enjoyed and with the RAF celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2018 I’ve recently found the perfect Father’s Day present.  RAF100 The Official Story was published by Carlton Books last month and is written by leading historian James Holland.

RAF100 The Official Story

RAF100 The Official Story is a 224 page hardback book commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Air Force. The author has been given unique access to their historic archives, and the book is full of photographs and information from the birth of this great service right through to the modern-day.

Any aviation or military enthusiast is going to really appreciate this book and it really is a perfect present for Father’s Day.

When we go to RAF Fairford and see the modern aeroplanes of the 21st century it’s often hard to envisage the aircraft that were used in the First World War.  The book beautifully documents the progression in design over the decades and gives you a great sense of the courage required by those first pilots.

As well as learning more about the RAF, RAF100 The Official Story showcases some of the characters who have shaped the service over this last century as well as technological advances.

RAF100 The Official Story

We learn about the development of radar and the massive boost this gave to us as a nation during the Second World War when our pilots were defending our shores.  There’s information about the various aeroplanes that have been used in the RAF over the years and where they have operated in.

I know that my husband and son will be sat reading RAF100 The Official Story together.  They’ll be enthralled by the Dambusters as much as they will be learning more about the Cold War and beyond.

  1. I have been RAF mad since I was a kid. My Taid used to take me up to Rhosneigr (RAF Valley) every school holiday usually on a Tuesday with our butties, warm coats and sun cream (just in case) and our very own Radio to pitch in to the conversations. We’d spend hours, usually from 10 until about 4 watching the Hawks, the tornadoes and if we were lucky some of the American aircraft that just happened to be flying over! Oh and of course Search and Rescue!

This is where the love developed for me, from then on I was dead set on joining, but sadly got refused due to the history of my Asthma. Annoyingly I can run a 5k in under 25 minutes. The fitness test was no issue. I just wouldn’t pass the medical.

I joined the Air cadets at 15/16years old and stayed on as a member of staff. I learned so much, and got so many opportunities to fly, and spend full weeks on RAF bases. It was the next best thing, but to me it was THE best thing. Developed my confidence and showed me I could do things that I never would dreamed about before.

This book looks amazing, and is definitely on my list of buys for the near future. The Air cadets made me proud of our History. And my Squadron number was 1918! Coincidence? I think not 🙂
