Today I’m taking part in a blogger tour to celebrate the publication of Right of Passage by Lee Jenkins through Aeon Books. You can read more from Brook Cottage Books who took part in the blog tour yesterday here.
Right of Passage is the latest novel from Jenkins which follows the life of Chris, a young black middle class American who growing into manhood in the 1960’s. We follow his journey as he leaves home and tries to find his way in predominantly white society.
He meets and falls in love with Miriam and Right of Passage shows how their relationship develops with the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War. How can their love endure with resistance to the mixed race relationship from all around them. We get to see close up how racial tensions effected those living through this time in America and how these issues seep right through to our present time.
There’s plenty to think about as you read Right of Passage and at times I’m left wondering if society has actually taken much of a step forward. It’s a thought-provoking read, but fundamentally a love story where you hope the characters involved can overcome all the obstacles put in their way.
I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below for your reference and you can follow the Right of Passage tour tomorrow with Whispering Stories.
disclosure: we were sent a copy of this book in exchange for this post.
