I’m remaining positive that we will actually get some long-lasting sunshine this year. Yes, I want a summer please, here in England. It’s not too much to ask is it?? One thing that has always concerned me since Monkey was born has been keeping him safe from the sun’s harmful rays. I grew up in an era where my parents never bothered with sun screen and just drowned my brother and I in Kaolin lotion at the end of a day at the beach. I dread to think what state my skin is in now after that! Luckily, we live in a more educated world now and I’ve got sunglasses, sun hat and sun cream on hand as soon as the first sun of decent weather arrives. No need for kaolin here these days. I’ve discovered an online retailer who offer a wide range of childrens products, and who can also help me out over the summer months. Safetots offer sun protection products and they’ve sent us a couple of items to try out.
The first item we put to the test from Safetots was the Sun Sense Toddler Milk Roll On. What a great idea, was my first impression. Sun cream can be such a messy thing to use, especially on younger children. The next thing I noticed was that this product is tested to Australian standard – that made me really confident that it would offer Monkey the protection he needs in the sun.
I always use SPF50 sun products on Monkey, and this product is made especially for young children and has been dermatologically tested. Getting sun cream on Monkey can be a bit of a performance! It tickles, I don’t want to have it, its cold, its sticky ……. and on and on. I’m sure I’m not alone!
Well, something wonderful, and rather surprising happened the first time I went to use the Sun Sense product. Monkey wanted to put it on himself. Wow, yes of course you can.
Actually this product, featuring the roll on application is great for kids to take a bit of responsibility. Monkey knows it’s important for him to wear sun cream and now he jumps at the chance to apply it himself! The great thing is, there is no mess, the product stays on him, rather than ending up on his clothes, the floor, his shoes. It rubs in easily and will even keep him protected on water for 40 minutes.
Next up was a complete relevant for me, something I’d never even heard of before. Safetots offer sun protection in the form of the NScessity Personal UV monitor.
The NScessity Personal UV monitor is supplied with a button battery and can be fitted with either the neck strap or belt clip provided. I thought the strap would be easier for me to use, it was easy to fit and remove the belt clip.
To check the current UV level you just click the +/UV button, and then hold the MODE button for 3 seconds to clear the history. Click on the +/UV button again and the current UV level will be displayed.
In this photo you can see that the UV level is 4 which is considered Low, the different faces that appear on the screen reflect the level of UV as another indication/warning.
You can then set the timer. There are three modes – 5 minute, 10 minute and sun exposure timer. To be honest I couldn’t understand the point of the 5 and 10 minute times. I have found the Sun Exposure Time mode really useful, as you set it up with your skin, hair and eye colour and it works out the length of time you can spend in the sun with sun protection used.
On a recent trip to Stowe Gardens, I entered Monkey’s details and it gave us a 45 minute timer.
The alarm went off after the 45 minutes and both Monkey and I knew it was time to reapply his sun cream. This is so handy as a gentle reminder, especially when you are having fun in the sun.
I think it’s a great idea for £5.99 and it will be coming out and about with us over the summer months and it’s so small I can pack it in my handbag when we visit family in Spain.
The only downside I can see to this product – I can’t find anyway of turning it off without removing the battery. That seems daft to me.
disclaimer: we were sent these items in exchange for an honest review

Over 40 and a Mum to One
A Mum with a 13 year old son, enjoying life and having fun as my son travels through school life. We love to get outdoors whenever possible and make the most of the world around us. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
That’s a good idea. I always forget to re apply the sun lotion
The roll on sun cream is absolutely brilliant.
These are both great products – love the idea of a roll-on, non messy suncream, and the UV monitor would be ideal for holidays and days out. Thanks for linking up with #TriedTested
That looks like such a great idea!! I like the fact the sun cream is roll on….
