The Black and White Book Club

The Black and White Book Club – a book review

Just before the madness of Monkey’s birthday and Christmas descended I received a couple of lovely books from Maverick Books to review.  I have to apologise for the delay in publishing the reviews, it bears no reflection on either books, but I didn’t want them to get lost in a month worth of Christmas themed book posts!.  I have a soft spot for Maverick Books as my first ever book review was with them, through Izziwizzi Kids Playfest.  It was more of a quick video review, than a written post as you can see.  Seems so long ago now!  Today I want to share with you The Black and White Book Club by Alice Hemming.

The Black and White Book ClubThe Black and White Book Club is a 22 page paperback book, packed with colourful illustrations by Kimberley Scott.  It tells the story of the animals at the Heavenly Hippos Wildlife Park.  The Black and White Book Club tackles the idea of differences and similarities and how we should include people rather than exclude them.

The title of this book, did worry me for a second, but once you start reading it, you realise that actually it has a very good moral behind it, something to instill in all young children.  Inclusion and acceptance of others.  A great idea for a now 4 year old Monkey to learn.

George the Giraffe is eager to join The Black and White Club which is run by the Park Penguins.  One big problem – he is obviously not Black and White, or Black, or White!  We follow George on his journey, through the upset of being refused membership to this exclusive club to him setting up his own club – The Tall and Short Club.

The Black and White ClubI won’t ruin the whole story for you, I always prefer that you read it yourself.  We have certainly enjoyed reading this book over the last month.  It poses lots of discussion points, we talk about the different animals, their colours, height and so on.  We like it and I’m sure you will too.

Watch this space for another Maverick Books review coming soon.

disclaimer:  we were sent this book for the purpose of an honest review.

  1. We reviewed this book too and I did worry over the title at first but it is a great book to teach children about difference and not making that a reason to exclude people.

  2. The book is fantastic even though it has only 22 pages. I bought it for $ 6.25 (price good). My child is appreciation for a book. Especially the giraffe 🙂

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
