The Counterfeit Candidate

The Counterfeit Candidate – AD sent for review

disclosure:  we were sent the item mentioned for the purpose of review

When I read the Diary of Anne Frank as a child it began a lifelong interest in the stories of those who suffered at the hands of the Third Reich.  It’s a period of our history that I believe should never be forgotten.  But what if Hitler hadn’t actually killed himself in his bunker?  What would that mean for us all? When I was asked if I’d like to review The Counterfeit Candidate by Brian Klein recently, I read the press release and knew it was right up my street.

The Counterfeit Candidate

The Counterfeit Candidate is set between Berlin in 1945, and Buenos Aires and San Francisco in 2012.  The story begins in Buenos Aires on 8th January 2012 as three men are breaking into the vault of the Banco Estero, one of the oldest banks in the whole of Argentina. Little did those men know that the secrets held within one of the safety deposit boxes would seal their fate and reveal secrets that had been well hidden for nearly seventy years.

A couple of weeks later in the USA Senator John Franklin secures the nomination to represent the Republican party in the race to the White House, and he is firmly tipped to secure the top job. But maybe he isn’t all that he seems.

As The Counterfeit Candidate flips between the two countries it becomes clear that the Franklin family are inextricably linked with Hitler, his partner Eva Braun and his right-hand man Martin Bormann and history is about to be rewritten.

Chief Inspector Nicolas Vargas of the Buenos Aires Police Department is tasked with finding the criminals who have masterminded the bank robbery and he soon realises that there must have been something very important hidden within one of the safety deposit boxes.  When the robbers end up gruesomely murdered but their ill-gotten gains appear to have been left undisturbed, the plot thickens.  Vargas calls on his old friend Lieutenant Troy Hembury of the LAPD as he tries to unravel the mystery.

The Counterfeit Candidate is very well written, the storyline had me gripped from the outset and it was definitely one of those books that had me staying up late into the night wanting to know what happened next.
